In view of the current goings on with FIFA at the moment, do you think some of the people involved in F1 are looking over their shoulders ?

What you mean Bernie and his £1bn tax bill. He's not looking over his shoulder so much as looking in his pockets.

Don't be silly, he will just pay off someone and it will disappear. Just like paying his way out of a bribery trial.. Couldn't make it up.

What's the deal with F1 and who gets the races? Are the races arranged by the FIA who are paid by the tracks, and the tracks paid by FOM?

If, say, Knockhill or Magny Cours wanted to host an F1 race, what would be the process?

F1 post millenium seems to have been pretty open about going where the most money is, but if the bidding process is as simple as "we will pay the organisers lots of cash" that doesn't seem massively corrupt so much as mercenary.

FOM hold commercial rights to F1, if a promoter wishes to hold a race they need to approach FOM, agree terms/fees etc. The FIA would get involved to ensure that the track meets safety standards and has all the organisational/logistics stuff in place.

So Knockhill could say "here's a brown envelope with $70M dollars from Brian Souter and a castle in Scotland full of attractive escorts" or they could say "here's a well researched proposal which will draw in a 200,000 crowd and we'll give you half of the $1000 ticket price and 20% of all deep fried sales" and either could be accepted? With the FIA only being able to throw a spanner in the works if the track wasn't up to scratch?

I don't really think you can corrupt a system like that since it basically seems to boil down to giving FOM an appealing argument to host it there. The only link that could maybe be corrupted would be bribing the FIA to pass a track that wasn't good enough.

It doesn't suit the axe grinders, but Monza pay about $6m per race, Spa $8m and Monaco doesn't pay a cent. Silverstone, Albert Park & Suzuka pay mid $20m per race but Singapore, Bahrain and Abu Dhabi pay $40m, $46m and $50m respectively so it isn't strictly alloted to the highest bidder as the traditional countries pay less than the Asian circuits so if anything these circuits would be right to ask questions rather than some oaf who thinks races should only be in the muddy potato fields of Europe.

$22m for Monza according to the normally well informed Joe...

Yeah basically. I think FOM are pretty switched on and write in clauses about ensuring the track is suitable or will be changed.. I think they take a fixed percentage of gate ticket stubs, so I think they will be interested in access for spectators, car parking etc..

To be honest I don't really understand why some people have automatically assumed that there is corruption in F1 and because some people from FIFA have been arrested that similar action will follow within the F1 world.
