I'm only just catching up on all the TV coverage for Monaco (I was out there for it)
But was it ever explained why Lewis stopped before the tunnel on the slow down lap ?

I had a theory that he was going to stop and get out and walk back to his apartment - like Senna did in 88 ?
Same place. Different circumstances.

Sorry if it's been discussed on the main thread

(edited coz I'm an idiot and spelt Lewis / Louis ! )

To be honest, I thought he was going to do similar. It would've been a memorable moment, that's for sure. After such a mistake by the team, at Monaco of all tracks, I think I would've gone home at that point too!

No idea why he stopped but i doubt he carries his house keys with him in the car.

The moment I saw his car stopped I immediately suspected that he was intending to emulate Senna. However, Lewis is probably a bit more respectful of his team and the event - and he had a duty to be on the podium (which Senna didn't back in 1988) so after a few moments thought, he decided to proceed around to the start/finish line.

It didn't stop him having a mini-tantrum by running into his position marker though.

Yes, but as we all know now, being part of that mistake he really didn't have the high moral ground did he?

Senna had no moral high ground. It was only his mistake. At the time if PH existed we would be all saying Senna was throwing his toys out of the pram because he made his own mistake. etc etc

Lewis I guess, was probably sensibly taking a few moments to collect his thoughts and emotions before carrying on. But I'm also sure it crossed his mind to get out of the car and walk home.

Huge amount of respect for Lewis for not throwing his toys out of the pram - we'll allow him running into the 3place marker

Am not sure if Lewis lives on the eastern side of the hairpin or above the track above the town. Senna only had a 3 minute walk and no marshals. The fine for Lewis to miss a media event would be huge and M-B would look pretty stupid. Senna back in the day didn't finish the race so had no further events to do.

My take is that he was going to park it there and boycott the podium. I'm assuming that the there would have been discussion on the radio where the team explained the penalties he may have faced as a result of it and that he reluctantly carried on.

I thought it was illegal to stop on the slow down lap....

"After receiving the end-of-race signal all cars must proceed on the circuit directly to the post race parc fermé without any unnecessary delay........An exception to the above will be made for the winning driver who may perform an act of celebration before reaching parc fermé"

No exceptions for acts of huffiness - Lewis should be disqualified, yes I really believe he should definitely be disqualified.

As the car & driver would not have been presented in Parc Ferme for inspection/weighing/whatever subsequent to the race finish I would assume he would have possibly lost the points for 3rd, and Merc too . . . . that would have been a bit of an "own goal" & adding insult to injury.

Who knows, Big Al might have pulled his Monaco residency , that would hurt come tax-paying time.

The way he smacked into the marker really made me chuckle. smile

30 seconds getting his head together quietly in the car, rather than sitting in the car at the podium in full glare of the cameras.

That is what I think. I also suspect (imagine) someone on the pit wall had a quick word to try to settle him a little too.
