Those whinging about SKY and *just* for F1...er you do realise that some of us also regard the European rugby and more importantly the cricket coverage just as much as F1 right? I believe some folks even watch football.

SKY Sports is bloody awesome!

if I was going to whinge as you put it, it's this:

Why can't Sky separate out the different sports over its sports channels?

what I am getting at here is that if you happen to be into the rugby but CBA with football, you can't not get football and thus are paying stupid money (as Wayne and co's wages come from somewhere!)

they split of F1, a good thing, as I get that without the rest of the crap, but that's historical (was part of Sky HD).

Economics.

I don't think Sky would be able to afford to run Sky F1 if it was dependent on F1 fans only.

If thats true, then why bid for it and produce it? Whats the point?

other way round I suspect?

Sky are committed to paying £4.2Bn for football

just how much do you think F1 costs them as a % of that?

Businesses gamble. They take a punt and hope that by starting a new service it will attract the custom they hope for. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

BT are spending a fortune in an attempt to garner a chunk of the sports coverage market. It may be years before it turns a profit for them - if ever.

Setanta had a go and came a cropper.

BT are nothing like Setanta

BT are leveraging their ownership of the up and coming broadcast medium otherwise known as the internet.

10 years time, IPTV will be the dominant medium for this stuff, even Sky realise that (and are piling money into it).

Three hundred pounds a year to watch telly. Mental. Actually, three hundred pounds to watch 19 lots of two hour races. Certifiable.

Oh go on, start a defence about the Qualifying coverage and other add ons. I'm sure someone will be convinced Sky gives value for money to F1 fans..
It does sound mental doesnt it? I have Sky F1 and its about £450pa. I probably spend more on coffee than that. And yes, thats mental too!

The world has changed so much hasn't it. My parents didnt have any of these costs, broadband, sky, smart phones, netflix etc etc etc.

The simple truth is that I could probably cut my monthly bills by 25% and in reality loose very little.
If people just want the races, then £190-odd for 19 1-week NowTV passes.

I'm sure BT are far more on top of what they are doing than Setanta was. The point I'm making is that businesses take risks. BT may be taking less of a risk than Setanta - but nothing in business is guaranteed.

If you want to save a few more bob, subtract the BBC live events too.

Absolutely. No businesses are immune from risk - some are just more exposed than others.

no, not really...

in the same way the government had to bail out the banks, do you honestly think they could stand by and let BT fail?

think about that for a moment.....

Losing BT would make a bank failing pail into insignificance...

everyhting from national security/defence and the city being able to trade though to 999 services and mrs. migging phone...

I don't watch football and would love it to be a separate subscription channel on Sky just to find out how much a month I pay for them covering the so called beautiful game and also so I could opt out of paying for it.

I cancelled my Sky Sports subscription last month, as I hardly ever watched it... Thought it was only football not F1 also lol. Is BBC coverage normally this bad? That annoying woman is she a regular? Am I the only one who's teeth itch when Coulthard is on air?
We have - by some margin - the two best F1 broadcasters on the planet in the UK. I've watched F1 in quite a few countries, it's really not a pretty sight elsewhere.

I've got an old Sky subscription which pretty much does this.

I currently pay £41.25 a month broken down as:
£30.00 for 'Variety'
£11.25 for 'Sky + HD Pack' which includes Sky F1 but no other Sky Sports channels.

This is equivalent to the current 'Family Bundle' which is £36, so I'm effectively paying £5.25 a month extra for Sky F1 which is fine by me.

It might be worth a call to Sky to see if they can match or better my deal.

That's an old introductory offer which you're lucky/well organized to retain. Not available to new subscribers.
If you make ANY change to your subscription you'll lose the F1 coverage too - they won't warn you but it'll be irretrievable. Don't even change your payment details or move address!

Thanks for that warning. I added 'half price sky movies for 6 months' 6 months ago which I intend to cancel soon so will make sure not to lose it F1 at the same time.
