Your saying that as a fan though.

The reality is lots of travel being away from family I'm sure the glamour soon wears of and it becomes a grind.

This is why wec is so attractive, they only race 6 times a year.
Oh yes it becomes a grind, although if they paid me £6-8m a year and let me drive the car I might have put up with it for longer smile

For well over £20 million a year at 30 plus years of age I would be happy to develop a car and collect the money so long as Honda gave me a number of car and bike franchises after the relationship ends. Alonso make money, lots of it and looks ahead to Le Mans and WEC.

Jenson should have walked and gone elsewhere. I am guessing he hoped for more from Honda with their history and nobody says no to £6-8 million or whatever, tax free for a one yea deal, plus all of the benefits McLaren offer.

It's not attractive though is it? No driver has turned down an F1 gig to go drive in the WEC. Drivers who get dropped from F1 go and take up pretty much anything to keep them driving in a competitive series.
Webber did.

The likes of button and alonso won't be getting dropped from f1 , they will be choosing to have more time with family yet still get there racing kick in another series.
Really? Who offered him an F1 drive?

I suspect that could change though!
F1 is in a bit of a mess and other forms of motorsport are becoming more interesting or relevant. As much as Bernie is disliked by some he is probably what keeps F1 on track, it may be the wrong one but its not the ditch!

I was hoping Button would have a good season which would lead to an extension and then maybe a truly competitive season. Sadly its not looking like that will happen the only saving grace is that on a racing / driving level Button has proved to be a more cost effective signing. Money may not be an issue for the team but I can't help thinking that keeping the old line up would have been more cost effective, happier and a lot less embarrassing. I really can't decide if I want to see Button "suffer" another season in F1 or move into an exciting form of motorsport.

At the moment it seems that when Honda / McLaren have a winning package they will be looking for a suitable driver in there prime!

Apparently (allegedly) he was offered a year's deal by Ferrari when they got rid of Massa, before Raikonnen got the drive.

That's exactly my point, your looking into the sport as a fan.

If you'd been in the sport for a decade the novelty wears off, look at casey stoner (moto gp) he ended up hating the press work, the endless travelling so he jacked it all in.

He was healthy, he had money he wanted to see his daughter grow up so why risk getting injured anymore when you've been world champion.

Surely better to semi retire and race when/where you want.

I have a feeling he'll decide to do something else with his life and we won't see him in any other form of motorsport post F1.

Sadly you are probably right, a shame because I think he could excel in something like the Le Mans 24

Several years ago I asked him that question and he told me that F1 was the pinnacle of his profession, so why would he want to do anything else in Motorsport. I'd put money on his having a family and expanding Ichiban.

Yup, but I'd love to see someone tempt him with the odd guest drive in World Rallycross though, would be a nice tribute to his old man having the Button name back on the side of a rallycross car.

Several years ago that might have been the case, but now I'm not so sure....

It's interesting to read about the contracts. I understand that Alonso has zero ability to exit his 3 year contract. I also hear Button only has a deal for 2015 only.

But that's all hearsay. I haven't seen the contracts. Has anyone else? If not, then all we write is based on conjecture....which we cannot back up with hard facts.
Come on Mark stop being so damn sensible - this is Pistonheads where everybody knows everything about every driver's contract plus the thoughts and minds of Clarkson et al and what will happen in the future...

Why would it have changed? His dad's dead, he's achieved everything and he's just married Jessie. If I'm lucky enough to bump into him on Friday evening I'll ask him the same question again smile

Casey Stoner was a moaning miserable sod that made Victor Meldrew look happy! I can't remember the exact article from Matt Oxley on Motorsport but he alluded that the Moto GP was a happier place without him there! Can't say I'm missing him either when you see Marquez and Rossi trading paint! Remember how quivery Stoners bottom lip got when Rossi beat him at Laguna Seca... Mind you Rossi did strop when he was on Michelins and Bridgestones were the tyres to have. But he at least enjoys his racing :-)

Not every rider can be mr pr like rossi, marquez.

Give me a rider like stoner or kiyo in bsb who don't play the game and wear there heart on there sleeve any day.

Stoner enjoyed the racing it was everything else off track he hated , he wasn't a outgoing people person so meet and greets, press work were a nigtmare for him.
