Why are Renault so insistant on buying Lotus with all its debt? Wouoldnt they be better off buying STR Force India, Manor etc?
A lot more facilities and equipment at Lotus/Enstone than Force India.
More to the point, why are Renault considering buying a team at all? Why are they still in F1? They don't seem to be in the best financial position and does F1 really sell Renaults?

Renaults 2015 first half operating profit was 1.4 billion euros, they are a very health company and have plenty of cash to spend.

Probably because the pending insolvency gives Renault a significant bargaining chip against Genii.

Also, history... it would be very strange for Renault to not purchase their old team.

I should imagine they could take on Lotus for a nominal fee; £1, but take on the debt and negotiate a preferential repayment amount which would be far cheaper than purchasing a solvent team.

Wouldn't it be great if Ferrari turned them down as well after they read....

.......Although Ferrari now looks like Red Bull's only short-term option, Marko has suggested that other possibilities could open up in future years'......

So its a stop gap engine then is it? Bet Ferrari won't like their engine been referred to like that, go on Ferrari you know it makes sense - refuse the supply!

I suspect Mercedes management will now feel much happier that any doubt they had over their decision has gone.

I'm surprised that RedBull have publicly painted themselves into a corner over this.

Or is this their only plan now, having an over inflated opinion of themselves? They are so far up st creek (without an engine) they think they are too big to end up engineless and Bernie Ecc will lean on Ferrari to give them engines?

I would like Red Bull to get Ferrari engines and beat Merc.

I think Merc want to appeal to the Yoof, so from a marketing point of view being part of the cool 'Bull gang would help, but their fear of losing to Adrian Newey is going to win out.

But what future partner would want to work with Red Bull? Renault gave them 4 world titles and then threw them under a bus when things didn't go well, not exactly the type of business relationship you want is it?

I reckon Red Bull will get the same deal Manor has, where they will get 1 year old Ferrari engines.

I'd agree with you if their chassis were anywhere near a match for the Mercedes at the moment, but that's just not the case. A far more likely reason for Mercedes refusing is that they don't want to deal with a petulant team who publicly badmouth their engine supplier as soon as things are less than rosy. They simply don't need to deal with that sort of negative publicity, and they've got slots for all of their engines, so why bother?

Is it just me or are Manor in a very strong position here, Red Bull need them to take a Mercedes Engine supply to allow them to get the Ferrari engines due to supply limitation rules.

Manor basically hold Red Bulls fate in their hands, they can demand pretty much anything they want of Red Bull and if Red bull decline Manor can hold onto the Ferrari engines effectively leaving Red Bull engine-less for next year.

If I was Manor I'd be asking for
- My Merc engine supply paid for.
- Some R&D facilities (either sharing or newly built).
- Some key staff.
- A dirty big wedge of cash (small in Red Bull terms but huge to Manor)

Dr Marko really can't help himself, can he? This sort of quote will surely only reassure the Mercedes board that he's a complete dick who they were quite quite right to turn away. If the door were even slighly ajar, he's just made sure it's been firmly slammed shut.

Won't Haas be a bit miffed if Red Bull gets a Ferrari engine and starts being competitive again?

I'd wet myself if Ferrari said no as well. Are Mechachrome still going? maybe they could be persuaded to reheat last years Renault V6. laugh

Interesting lead from Radiolemans.com from someone in the know. Renault will leave F1 at the end of the season and have a year out and then come back in as a new engine supplier, and can therefore test as much as they want in 2016 and have more engine tokens for 2017.

Meanwhile, Renault will buy Lotus in a fire sale when it goes bust and will run the Mercedes engine for a year. A similar situation to the BMW Sauber Ferrari a few years ago.
