Correct, doesn't sound like it used to, sounded more like the rest although I did notice a pop pop pop pop on over run

The sound from the Mclaren when I was at Spa was horrible - in particular as it slowed from high speed for slowish corners. The popping and farting just made it sound like the whole engine 'set up' was weirdly configured. The front runners were much smoother sounding.

I'm surprised more people haven't commented on the noise of the Honda. It struck me maybe they were doing what they did in Indy Car in 90's(?) and produced a torquey but not powerful enough engine. Back then it stemmed from the MotoGP (alright 500's for those in the know!) development of what they called the big bang engine. Realising racing motorcycles aren't at full power for long enough to justify constantly chasing peak power, they improved the rideability/traction of the bike to improve lap times. As they learned then though racing cars can handle very peaky power deliveries so it's not necessary and peak power is king!

I could be talking cobblers though!

I thought that was done to improve traction by having the power pulse within 90 degrees per crank rotation, giving the tyre time to recover traction in between "bangs", rather than chasing peak torque or power.

I think you might be right and my poor memory has scrambled the bits of info it does retain!

It broke in FP1 and they have had to put the old spec engine back in, earning him a 35 place grid penalty

Did they show a replay? Odd place to end up without some kind of mechanical failure.

Looks like he clipped the wall in the braking area and lost control.

Hope he's ok, that's high speed straight before that corner.

Sainz went off and hit the barriers hard. The armco has actually moved a lot.
