Possibly stupid question: Despite Sainz missing qualifying is there any chance of him being permitted to start the race from the back of the grid/pits if given the all clear by the medics?

Because he competed in Practice sessions then yes, it is a realistic possibility.

The team would go to the stewards and ask for permission.

Beautiful. Best moment of the year. Red bull in a perfect storm of their own making. Don't count your chickens etc, definitely don't slag off your current engine supplier before you have another lined up.
