According to this article it is completely standard, mechanically, albeit fully equipped with all available performance options, the only exception being a 'modified performance exhaust':

Doesn't the safety car has to keep its engine running throughout the race, that would rule out any of the ex racers

good points (i use the 'hand' when Karting wink )

but if travelling behind the safety car, causes tyre temps to drop so much as to cause more cars dropping off track then it's a bit counter productive wink
How many times has that happened under a safety car though (when conditions are not so bad that the cars will go off anyway)?

Safety car should be limited on fuel, have tyres that means it can only go fast for 3 laps, and sound crap

Personally (pipe dream I know) I'd like to see it rotated among the manufacturer teams - the Mercedes at some races, but McLaren and Ferrari at others. Being biased I'd also like to see a Lotus, but that would be stretching "manufacturer" and who knows if they'll be around/what they'll be called next season. How quick will the new Renault Alpine be?

I think the host nation should provide a safety car built in their country. If they don't make anything suitable, then they aren't a suitable country to host a GP.

Could make for a short season.

That concept reminded me of Sid Watkins saying at one GP they had to steal a car from the parking lot to be the medical car (early days of him being at races). Some poor sod would have seen their car being thrashed around the track in front of their eyes.

Which led me to this interview that has nothing to do with safety cars, but is very interesting, and almost a summary of Sids two very good books.

Still can't find the quote about that stolen car though...ah well.

Monaco used to do it with a bit of flair: http://jalopnik.com/5658230/holy-ferruccio-a-lambo...
