Fair dos. What with Ferrari perhaps being competitive, McLaren perhaps having found some pace, Manor having a decent engine and driver, and a new team, I'm rather looking forward to it. smile

I'm not going to be able to watch the first race, I have to be up early on Sunday anyway to get a ferry. I'm really hoping that when I stop and check the results around midday it won't be a Mercedes 1-2 and it will trigger some interest in the season ahead.

I think I've said it before that while I can appreciate a good battle further down the order it never gives me the same edge of the seat excitement that a battle for the lead does. Maybe this means I don't fully appreciate F1, but I can't be alone in feeling like that can I?

Nope. If the Mercs run off again then I'll get bored fairly quickly.

Rather a lot of anti-Hamilton sentiment on here.

Have any of the posters on here met him?
Yes, several times. Always gracious, always gives time to the person he's talking to.

I first met him in 2006 after that sensational GP2 victory. A young boy then but with the same enthusiasm that we now only rarely see on TV, but is still there when he's 'off camera'.

And as to the casino, I've been there, in jeans. It's pretty naff, but I can recommend the sky jump off the top. That's fantastic fun.

I always had a lot of time for Di Resta and was disappointed when he left F1. To be fair to him he was probably one of the unluckiest drivers in the season or two he was in it.
Miserable bugger. And that's not just my view....ask most of the hacks....I thought he might lighten up in DTM, but at Zandvoort last year I didn't once see him smile...perhaps he was just having a bad weekend? ( actually, he had very few good weekends in DTM last year, to be fair!)

Di Resta has never seemed to realise that in order to be marketable he must first be likable. Its not enough to simply be able to drive, F1 these days is a package and Di Resta is lacking part of that.

Well you don't have to be likable.

But if you want to be an arse you definitely need to be better than midfield

It's about the time they come out of their caves, just before the start of a new season.
Best ignore them, it'll be the same trolls over and over.

I don't much go in for the life style he pursues (as i I could ever afford it! But you know what I mean) but he never comes across as anything other than just a nice bloke who's having the absolute time of his life.

The anti-Hamilton brigade are a weird old bunch.

As a racing driver, he's answered every criticism thrown his way. Yet the terminally clueless still deride him.

(Mind you, the same could be said of any driver on that grid)

People really need to rewatch the old seasons, half the arguments about the good old days would be blown out of the water, too many rose tinted specs being used.
I've just finished the 96/97/97/99 seasons and the same old same old, tyres gone off, fuel saving, dodgy pay drivers, teams out in front by miles ect ect ect, just less radio traffic to put it all at the forfront.

Quite. And go further back in time and look at the gaps from the front to the back of the grid...

It's like going out for a drive. You just get stuck behind another car when you have no rush and you probably wouldn't be able to describe much of the journey within a few hours of completing it. If you have an amazing blast along open roads and perhaps a squeaky bum moment you'll potentially remember a lot of the details years later. In the same way the boring races and seasons are forgotten, but the great ones are remembered. So it seems like it was "only" good times looking back.

Well, the Surfing part is easy - Renault put their F1 car on a huge surfboard and took it to the beach.

Edited to add: This isn't a joke. Here's a photo:

As for the Aston linkup, they are using Merc engines in their road cars, aren't they?
Manor are also using merc engines...

Hrmm.

FFS, Saward is getting worse at this stuff. "I know thing it I'm not telling". Well say it or stfu. Grasping for attention like the fat kid in a playground should be below a journo of Joe Sawards ability.

If he just announced secrets like that he'd probably never be told any again.

If Aston are coming into F1 in some capacity (safety cars, sponsorship, whatever) then they'll need the hoopla that surrounds it to make it worth their while.

Won't be safety cars (sadly) already seen a pic of the amg safety cars being unloaded. Sponsoring manor when it could of been force India seems an own goal... Maybe they'll end up on the Williams?
