F10 535d servicing quote
Discussion
Hi
After some advice - my car is due a service in a thousand miles so I went to BMW to see what it needed and a quote for the work.
Oil change
Vehicle check
Fuel filter
Oil filter
Air filter
Pollen filter
And it was apparently a special offer price £532 inc vat and a wash.
Does that sound right price wise ?
Also on the idrive it only shows oil and vehicle check not the other bits - though I'd assume that the oil filter and air filter would be changed at every oil service.
Seems pricy to me especially as the Vehicle check could find other stuff.

Blimey, thats an eye gouging amount of money for an oil & filter change that even I can do in an hour or so to do (except the fuel filter). I'll keep my E39 going a bit longer!
More seriously, how many miles are you at? I presume it is many as you say the fuel filter needs doing which I would expect is adding to the price. Do you really need to maintain FBMWSH, and will it add enough to your resale price to outweigh the price premium of going to an indy specialist?
Stick the vehicle reg in here to see whether you are getting the menu pricing for FBMWSH https://www.bmw-service.co.uk/

It's 72k now.
Oil change is normally £160-180 depending that's due to the quantity of the oil and the super long life oil used.
I'd be interested to know how to do the pollen filters and air filter. Basically they read it from the key so unless you can tell the car it's done then it assumes service not carried out

call around other BMW dealers for a better quote but I think its not massively off.
I might get flamed for this but the intervals for servicing are so far apart that you should not scrimp on it.
It is a 535d after all, If you keep such a machine then obviously it needs looked after.
I am not saying that means spend money you don't need to but what they quoted doesn't seem so far off. I am sure for normal servicing from any dealer is around 300 pounds for a basic service so 500 pounds for a car around 72k miles with other filters to be done is about fair.
People always say go to independents and I do but sometimes its not much cheaper to be fair. I had my car serviced and the small service was still 350 pounds and a major one was 550. Its a nothing special either: mercedes s320.
These sorts of cars need upkeep.

I've no issue at all with getting it done is was more is the price ball park right + why don't they change the oil filter and air filter at every service ?
Previously I've priced the independent and there was £15 in it so given it would be FBMWSH v Indy it simply didn't make sense.
Given the next car is going to be an interesting petrol maybe F10 M5 or its competitors I wonder if a chat with one of the salesmen would lead to getting such a car for the day when it's in and that may result in a future purchase? Possibly as I've bought from there before speak with the actual salesman I dealt with to see if strings could be pulled

You could likely save a decent sum on supplying your own oil as a starting point. What volume and weight of oil does the 535d take?I might get flamed for this but the intervals for servicing are so far apart that you should not scrimp on it.

Before Christmas I enquired about a new battery for my 335d (including fitting and coding) - BMW dealer wanted £485, BMW independent wanted £285. To date, the indy I use charges nearly half the dealer for the simple reason that they don't to pay rent on a massive showroom.I might get flamed for this but the intervals for servicing are so far apart that you should not scrimp on it.

Even £285 sounds like a big old bill to me, I'm sure the last battery I had fitted (E70 4.8 )was only £170 at a BMW dealer.pistonheadforum said:

Absolutely crazy!
Not long before even swapping a light will require a special ID on the bulb coded somewhere before it works. Can only get those from dealers with massive markup.
Absolute license to print money as per inkjet cartridges.
Should really be in the "things that annoy me thread" ...

Have you tried the BMW website, should give you a standard price for servicing, just enter your reg. Shows the prices for all service items. It sometimes looks ok until you add it all up

Yes that's £30 more than the price I was quoted. https://www.bmw-service.co.uk/
Thing is apart from them reading my key fob the I drive says oil change and vehicle check which according to that link would only be £240 not the £530 odd I've been quoted.
I wonder how many people strictly go via the idrive servicing so it's oil change only but then no one would ever change the fuel filter or air filter.

I guess it depends on your warranty status and whether you take it to a indy or not. I'm not even sure how many Indy's can read or update the keys? I had the nasty shock last year, when I was expecting just an oil service from the indo in the idrive, but then got told I needed some filters changed too. I need rear pads (and I bet discs too) soon but I'll be getting a few quites first.Thing is apart from them reading my key fob the I drive says oil change and vehicle check which according to that link would only be £240 not the £530 odd I've been quoted.

But what is the frequency ofFuel filter
Pollen filter
Air filter
It certainly doesn't appear to be with every oil change - and given oil changes are every 25k ish miles that's at least 50k on the same filters! Surely that cannot be right?
When I had my fiat Coupe 20V Turbo every 12 months I'd replace
Oil
Oil filter
Pollen filter
Air filter
Fuel filter
With additional items every other year
Brake fluid
Coolant flush
Spark plugs
Air con regas
Seems modern cars get drastically less things changed in services/maybe tolerances are much better now and as such don't wear out as quickly?

Is that an exaggeration or has it really taken 25k miles for the condition based service computer thing to ask for the oil to be changed?Sorry for not answering any of your questions, but I'm considering a 535i or d and there's confusing information on the interweb on the oil change intervals.
