A number of sites are reporting that Curva Grande at Monza is going to be reprofiled and a chicane added in order to allow motorcycle racing.

The changes have been agreed with Charlie Whiting, and will be introduced for 2017.

if they are going to do it, why can't they do it as an addition, keeping the original curve grande there as well, and have the motorbike chicane as a deviation from the original circuit? That way cars could still use the curve, but bikes use the chicane?

This would be the sensible option - but you cannot blame them for looking after themselves with the ever capricious Bernie.

Well if Bernie didn't threaten to axe the race every year tthey probably wouldn't feel the need to accommodate other races. Would be a real shame if they altered the track....... Spa isn't quite the same since they altered the bus stop and I think Monza would be totally ruined if they altered this iconic corner.

For the F1 they could shut the 1st chicane off at the end of the pit straight and let them run flat chat through the revised curva grande to the new chicane??

Plenty of run off from the new curva grande across to the current curva if they get rid of the trees.

What's the reason the bikes can't run Curva Grande as it is?

Lots of trees will be cut down for that, I thought they couldn't do that in the Royal Park of Monza?

I presume it's the diminishing run off at the exit, where the speeds will be highest

I believe they can so long as they replant the same number that they cut down, if not more.

IIRC when they last reprofiled Lesmo 1 and 2 they had to commit to planting about 4000 new trees in order to be allowed to carry out the work.

World Superbikes have had no problems through Curva Grande

Monza is still an epic circuit. Not least, the passion of the fans and the vaguely affordable GA access.

They do exactly that at Silverstone and Barcalona, why do they need to do something different at Monza?

Trees, by the sound of it. They'll have to grow more to make up for the ones they chopped down, and the only place for those will be on the old track.

A shame really. The low downforce at Monza as is means that the cars can run a bit closer together, which results in stuff like this:

It's not really the end of the world. They can remove the Roggia chicane and just put it earlier along the track. It's going to be a bit daft though negotiating Rettifilo, then squirting up to 5th gear and then slamming on the anchors again for another chicane in the same sector.
Unless of course they simply move Rettifilo further down the straight, thus replacing 2 chicanes with 1 (red line). I suspect this will be frowned upon though as it will make Lesmo1 a ballsier corner, and F1 is all about the wussies nowadays.

That doesn't look too bad. I really hate the chicane they put at the end of the straight so this would remove the need for that.

Think it's a valid question - if bikes have been going round without any issues for a while now why are they changing it?
The MotoGP bikes are currently at Mugello, is there talk of them changing to Monza and demanding changes be made before they race on it? I can't find anything online suggesting that this is the case.

That would remove an overtaking opportunity though?
