I'm thinking of kicking Sky into touch as it's getting expensive for just watching F1 and the crap my wife watches.

I do like to watch the races live, though with three kids I rarely get left alone in peace - I wonder if terestrial will get highlights in 3 years time when Sky get all the live races exclusively?
Yes but it will be like ITV's highlight package for the moto gp currently. Probably be on the day after ie Monday night.
From what I can gather, from 2019 F1 will be exclusively Sky only, I read that as also no highlights on terrestrial as the only mention of highlights are for the British GP.

There will be a terrestrial highlights package covering every race cobbled together at the last minute to placate us tight wad plebs. The advertisers will demand it, free to air is king for brand exposure.

Can't believe that you think the Sky coverage is better than CH4.

Let's hope so. I can cope with 1978 levels of coverage. After all, I coped with it in 1978. If there is no highlights package though, that's it for F1 as far as I'm concerned.

I watch both (as well as occasionally seeing the NBC coverage) and I think the Sky coverage is a lot better than Ch4.

I quite like Ted. Brundle is the best pundit there is for F1. Crofty is pleasant enough.

Most of the Sky coverage though is Paul Deadresta droning on. No thanks.

C4 coverage is better, or you can turn the sound off either channels,
and use the BBC 5 Live coverage which also features on the official F1 app if you subscribe.

That's because Ant & Brundle were at Le Mans, so DiResta took the lead.

My biggest irritation with the C4 coverage remains the incredibly long delays in making the programme available on demand. I couldn't watch the race live yesterday since I had other things on but was all nicely geared up for an enjoyable F1-fuelled evening. Checking in on the All4 app/site every hour or so though resulted in me giving up in frustration at around 10pm and I ended up watching it this morning before leaving for work. Which meant that I had to skip through pretty much all the pre-race build up and all the post-race analysis to get it fitted in.

How on earth can it take them more than five and a half hours to put something that they already have in a suitable digital format online is a complete fking mystery to me! irked

It's been the same since the start of this season. They don't seem to get any better at the moment.

Channel 4 has nothing like the technology and expertise that the BBC has when it comes to on-line resources.

But, of course, the BBC is rubbish and everybody hates it.

It doesn't but they are never going to show it on 4OD before it's terrestrial showing are they? the highlights were avaiable on 4OD by 1AM, i watched them on my nowTV box cos i missed the C4 highlights at 11.30 PM

4OD ceased to exist early last year.

It's "All 4" now.

C4 probably doesn't have the resources for All4 that the beeb does for iPlayer, as the fact that they have only recently gained the functionality to watch online during broadcast demonstrates (and it still lacks the ability to restart the current programme that is so nifty on the BBC) but even taking that into account I would say that delays like yesterday's are ludicrous.

When patmahe complained to C4 back in May they responded to him saying it was taking about 4 hours to "process" but that they were hoping to improve it throughout the season (see this thread). Working on the assumption that the four hours is starting from the end of the broadcast then that would have meant it would have been available about 8:30 pm, which wouldn't have been that bad. But to get to 10pm and it still wasn't up? That's poor IMHO frown

I would expect they would wait until after they had broadcast their night time highlights version of the race.
I'm pretty sure the BBC didn't put the race up until after they'd shown their highlights programme later in the evening.

(I may be wrong).

That might have been their thinking - perhaps they get more ad revenue on OTA broadcasts then they do for All4, even with the fact that a 49min highlights package will have less ad-breaks than a 3.5 hour full race show? I can't think of a decent technical reason why it would take them so long which would suggest to me that the reasons are commercial or organizational, especially given they seem to have a long delay with showing highlights-only races as well.

I have absolutely no evidence to base this off but I can't help wondering if there might be some clause in the sharing deal with Sky that hobbles them?

As for the BBC I'm not sure what they did to be honest - I just don't recall it ever being an issue, if I missed the actual race broadcast I just watched it that evening on iPlayer.

BBC footage used to appear a lot sooner on catchup.

If BBC did a live race, the show was available a few hours later.

I can't recall how highlights were timed around the catchup availability, but I could always watch a race on iPlayer before bedtime on a Sunday. Can't do this with C4 as the show does't appear until around 10 - 11pm.

The Beeb's media handling system is apparently better than ch4s. (I know what the Beeb's one can do as I worked on it).

I'm sure the Beeb's live races were available within about two hours of broadcast last year. You can also pause/rewind the live broadcast stream by up to two hours.
