Pretty cool vid of the testing of it

I also like this one, where they fired a wheel at it:

I'm wondering if they've varied the angle at which they fire the wheel at the screen.

When fired straight at it, it coped very well.

I think it looks odd because it's been fitted to a car that wasn't designed to have it.

If the car was designed to have that integrated from the start it could look quite good! It would look far more elegant and less like something they've just stuck on for the day.

Are there videos of the halo being tested in a similar fashion, would be very interested to see how it copes with the smaller 1 kg weight

The Ferrari one that has appeared on track was only decoration and not structural and AFAIK the Mercedes one has only appeared so far as CGI.

OK dirty screen, my solutions

1/ Clean them during pitstops, extend Pitstop times by having one wheel gun and one man per side this gives plenty of time to clean the screen

2/ Tear offs, again these can be pulled off in the current pitstop

3/ Super hydrophobic coatings

4/ Wipers
Okay, car in front goes off the track slightly, puts the edge of a rear wheel on the mud/gravel/grass, covers your screen.

So now, you have to slow down and pit?
The wind will blow it off! https://youtu.be/X9VdJYW3ZmM

Next question!

With the Halo device whats to stop the smaller object from just going underneath it?!?! Whilst it might protect against a larger object like a wheel, it still seems to not fully solve the problem they are trying to solve.

For me they should just leave it as it is. Open wheel, open cockpit.

I came to post the same thing with the Pixar car hehe

I like the Red Bull system better than the Ferrari halo though. If it is set for the cars to have something next year, I'd pick the windscreen. Would it deflect air up and over the airbox though?

As part of the knee jerk reactions to Senna's crash in 1994 holes were put into airboxes, the engineers at the time said it was of no real problem.

Benetton cut a hole in the back in 1994 as did other cars.

Although the following year some teams came up with holes (vertical chimney's on the Benetton and Ligier) which had the correct size even if they had even less effect of reducing air into the engine than they did the previous year.

The hole requirement was quickly dropped.

Engineers will always find a way to gain back what they might lose. We could even see a return to something a little more extreme if the rules permit it.

Is there a rule for the height of the airbox?

Ps. Air boxes don't always have to be on top either. smile

Having a cursory look at the long run data, I'm liking what I saw of McLaren. Button's run on the Soft was matching well with Ricciardo's run. Red Bull were quicker than McLaren in the Super Softs, who still can't get a handle on working the Super Softs. Mind you, Red Bull too are having some difficulty with it but are able to extract more pace out of it. Torro Rosso also were looking quick, if not quicker.

Not sure if the final stint Raikkonen put in was on Super Softs? If so, I'd say Hamilton's stint was about half a second quicker per lap. I hope Ferrari are sand bagging. However, Bottas' run on the Super Softs was comparable to Hamilton, maybe a bit quicker. Qualifying should give us some more answers. It's shaping up nicely.

Nah, it would deflect air up and over the driver and then directly into the airbox if they do their job properly. Fairing in the driver will help the aerodynamics a lot.

What exactly is this in response too? I'm not convinced it would have had a massive effect on the outcome of the 2 accidents I can think of, those being Bianchi and de Villota, possibly Massa's spring incident but that's a bit of a one off.

Yeah I can see it helping Massa and maybe, very possibly, Surteez. That said, there was also Alonsos near miss at Spa 2012 which could have been awful. I still think that a roll cage with two points at the front would look better than the Halo devices.

Lap time is already in the low 37s...anyone want to guess what the pole time will be? Low 36s?

Now Vettel is doing some long runs, his lap times are looking good in comparison to Hamilton's simulation yesterday. But I realised Bottas did a quicker stint on the Softs than Hamilton in the super softs. Presumably it's a final stint simulation... Otherwise Bottas is winning the race!

ETA: These are the fastest laps ever at this circuit now. My initial impression of Vettel's super soft stint was a bit closer to Hamilton's stint yesterday, but having looked at the data, I'd have to say Mercedes have the quicker car here. Hamilton was staying in the 41s for most of the stint whereas Vettel was doing low 42s and drifting to high 42/low 43s. Ferrari are having difficulty switching on the super soft, but Mercedes/Williams are doing OK on that front.
