Looking forward to this after watching it on TV for years, I'm finally going to be there for a race weekend.

Hoping for a Ferrari win, but those Mercs and Red Bulls will take some catching.

Anyone with any tips on where to eat and get a drink over the weekend ?.
Forget about the food bit but do you know about Stars n Bars and where it's located?

Hamilton is the fastest man on this circuit. Nobody can dispute that.
Actually it's very easy to dispute - 9 attempts, 1 pole, 1 win (nearly 2 wins of course with last year's safety car debacle, but luck had something to do with the win in 2008).

Because of Senna, Hamilton really really wants to believe and for everyone else to believe he's the quickest in Monaco but I am yet to be convinced.
Because he keeps fking it up. Which I very obviously describe in what I said.

But when he manages to string a lap together, he's untouchable. He SHOULD be untouchable. But he keeps dropping it. I was very clear about that. Perhaps you missed it?
Perhaps you missed the part where I said that it's very easy to dispute what you said. I am not trying to agree with you.

He crashes in Monaco because he thinks he is faster than he really is because of his Senna complex. And the definition of being quick is putting a lap together. I don't remember many crashes either - clipped the wall in 2008 which, through lucky timing, helped him win, a crash in quali one year, 2009 or 10 I think, and then a crash with Maldonado in the following race.

I like Hamilton, I want him to win but I'm not certain he's the best driver, particularly not at Monaco.

I fancy Riciardo for pole for this one, he was mighty impressive in qualifying last time out.

I agree. They might just have the best car round Monaco and grab a RedBull front row lock out.

If you turned left at turn 18 on the map above, Stars and Bars in on the row of buildings facing the harbour.
Relatively sensible pricing in there.

Monaco beefbar is a nice place in the harbour round the corner from the main harbour, it has a good range of food and has a decent range to cover most budgets (for Monaco). http://monaco.beefbar.com/

Check out the Black Legend boat moored near the beefbar, some think it's tacky, I think it looks ace, especially at night when all the lighting comes on. It has 2 tenders moored there two, all very bond villain in look. biggrin (Black Legend is an interesting establishment in the swimming pool section of the circuit.

Bella Vita is a decent Italian, that's next to the main pit straight.

Huit et Demi does some great food, just up the street from Bella Vita, you can spend a fortune or be sensible, if ordering the best steak be aware you are paying by weight, you could spend over £100 on a fairly average size steak.

I didn't really see the first half of the last thread, and the last half was just arguing about who was more at fault for the Nico/Lewis accident.

What's the deal with Red Bull then? I guess from what's been said that they have a PU upgrade and it has added a significant amount of power? Where does this put them, are they still second to Ferrari or are they more or less level with them now?

Renault and Red Bull tested the upgraded PU at Barcelona and both teams drivers were raving about it. It was scheduled for introduction at Montreal but now Renault are considering to fast track it for Monaco.

Vettel sounds bullish about Ferrari's chances too. Qualifying should give us some real answers, but as always the practice sessions can also give an indication.

I expect Merc will ultimately take pole. Which Merc, I don't know but I also expect it to be extremely close with the RBs. Its not the quickest car in a straight line and probably not got the best acceleration either but I think its probably more than a match in the slower corners. So I suspect RB will out do Ferrari in Qualifying. I am also expecting McLaren to do quite well, I think their engine deficit won't matter here, so I would like to see them both get to Q3 and be higher than 9th and 10th.

As for the race, well not too bothered C4 aren't doing it live. I am not around that weekend anyway and suspect a 1 hour highlights show to be sufficient.

While I am here, I have just finished watching all 6 hours of WEC at Spa. If you'd have watched that race and then watched F1 at Spain you'd be forgiven for thinking what everyone was raving on about saying it was one of the most exciting in years. WEC at Spa was literally 6 hours on the edge of your seat! And the racing is non stop, especially in the GT classes where it appears to be flat out or nothing.

Which corner for Lewis and Nico to tangle?
Can we just agree it's a racing incident now and save the stewards the effort?

Predictions.
Vettel to have the screaming ab dabs as another driver (Kyvat) gets too close and he melts his pit radio with more expletives, punishing the live feed bleep machine.
Alonso to park the car at the casino and spend the rest of the race enjoying the sun shine drinking a cold one.
Button to manage a solitary point, but praise the chassis as one of the best on the grid.
Some one on the commentary team to tell us all once more how amazing Max V is and how he can turn Red bull into wine just by passing his hand over it, as he truly is the second coming.

Years ago Stars n Bars used to be pretty much the only place to go but now there are lots of new places (but with ear splitting euro dance music) where Stars n Bars is unique is that it's directly beside the F1 Paddock so pretty much all day long you will see the drivers and other faces walking past

They have a bit of a random policy of needing a pass to get to them (sometimes they have someone checking other times they don't) but the pass comes with a discount voucher if you eat there!

You used to have to fill out a form by fax to request these passes but now there is usually a tiny kiosk that sell them as you walk down the hill towards it, they aren't expensive and definitely worth it because you will see stuff that others don't / won't!

This was my 2nd time at the Historic and in lots of ways I prefer it to the regular GP, I know nothing about historic race cars but there is a really nice atmosphere, some drivers were being careful but others were giving it everything which was fantastic to see (particularly the winner of the final race who was regularly VERY sideways on the way out of Rascasse then sideways on the way into the final turn!

It was also nice to see mechanics fixing things with a hammer rather than a laptop!

Renault to debut upgraded engine at Monaco Grand Prix

Confirmed now. Competition at the front is looking good for this GP. Estimated to bring half a second in lap time improvement around a typical lap (probably 0.2-0.3s around Monaco). Only two PUs available though, so Ricciardo and Magnussen get the upgrade due to their position in the Championship for their teams.

Red Bull have tended to struggle to work the softer tyres, so it will be interesting to see how well they can put this power increase to use.

If Max has the old engine and still beats Ricciardo it will cause a huge uproar!

PS. Oh and I'm not so keen at the food in Stars & Bars any more. It used to be good a few years ago but tends to be the typical overpriced burger joint stuff now. But as mentioned, a great view of the paddock so forget the quality of the food and enjoy the atmosphere.

Sounds like good news for the Renault teams. If we assume that this will bring RB almost in line with Ferrari on some tracks, where will it put* Renault?

*Obviously no one can know for sure until they run, but a best guess?
