He's stood down has he? Or has UKIP just ceased to be necessary and he's jumping the ship before it sinks? Will he be grovelling for a seat in the Lords now?

What'll happen to Carswell? Looks like he's ended up holding the baby, the baby with a rather smelly bottom and no wet wipes or fresh nappies to be seen.

Very different to Boris - Farage has achieved the aim of the last 17(?) years of his life. He has run himself ragged and will be looking forward to a rest.

I can understand him standing down. He's achieved what he set out to do. With the Brexit he won't have a job as an MEP at the European Parliament now either. It will be interesting to see where UKIP goes from here and if Carswell rejoins the Conservatives or carries on as a UKIP MP.

So, odds on Farage changing his mind within the next 12 months?

Interestingly there was a meeting of the UKIP National Executive Council today and last week Farage was talking about the possibility of expelling Carswell.

Farage might have gone for the reason he says (ambition achieved) but I know that UKIP were struggling for cash after last years election as their backers were giving money to the leave campaign rather than to them so he could be seeing the writing on the wall.

Carswell will be able to carry on as an independent. He is very popular in his constituency and I don't think party affiliation would make any difference to his chances of being re-elected.

Carswell was saying he wasn't defecting from UKIP because that would entail a by-election.

What a way to go!

He has achieved a lifetime's ambition. No other politician this century has come close.

What did Cameron, Clegg or Milliband ever achieve?

Well done, Nigel. I salute you.

Farewell... and thank you.
