Why would McLaren replace a driver who is keeping Alonso honest with a driver who is currently 9th in the 3rd tier formula he is currently racing in?

I'm not convinced by Vandoorne at all. Lots of excitement over his GP debut - but I'm starting to wonder if GP2 is any kind of barometer these days.

He's getting a bit old for a rookie season by modern standards, too!
I think Toto's defence of SFD is a bluff intended to convince Ron to drop 1 of his 2 WDCs in favour of a poorer alternative.

Unless I'm missing something, I don't see how Jenson has been at all shown up by Fernando.

The JB vs FA battle this year has been about whose car has held together best. Whilst the score is 4-2 to Fernando in races where both have finished, the telling statistic is that, of 13 races, they have only got both cars to the finish 6 times.

think button will stay in 2017 at McLaren

what's the point in being there for the journey not to be rewarded with the finished product

it will be Honda brawn all over again I hope

Your second line implies it would be Button's choice.....I think if he had free reign he'd probably stay there. But what do McLaren want?

Re the BBC - I'd suggest they are just supposing given what has already been said.

I'd guess that Button or Vandoorne agreeing to go Williams has triggered Massa's decision rather than vice versa.

He had to do that a couple of years ago. McLaren already pay him relative peanuts considering his ability and marketability. I hope he only does that if he knows it's a great car for next season - otherwise he should stick by his worth and go race something different where he's appreciated.

I think he got a payrise from 6---> 12 million

I don't see how stoff would bring in the same sponsorship or marketability he's also not doing that great in his current formula!

They honestly need to stick him in a Williams/sauber/Renault for a yr to gain experience

I must admit, Stoff in at Williams for a year, see how he does against Bottas. And another year for Button would make sense.

Stoffel showed what he's capable of when he jumped in the car in Bahrain. He was more or less matching Button's race pace but had a more scrappy start to the race due to lack of experience. I don't think it's a case of SV needing more time to get adapted. I'd say he's ready for the McLaren seat. However, I think it would come down to having that extra experience/marketability in Button plus the PR of having two WDCs.

Given their trajectory this year, my feeling is that McLaren in all likelihood be at the sharp end next year...not a dominant car like Mercedes but certainly a race winner.

Given that Alonso > Button, an Alonso Stoffel line-up makes sense.

It does. There's always the argument that in a year when there's a major regs change that experience is important. However I don't think Jenson is the best driver at developing a car though- it seems to me he's very fussy and wants his car to handle in a very specific way which doesn't work for other drivers.

I have never seen Jenson as a development driver. His style is too unique and narrow, and as you say, he can tune a car to him to an extent, but he does not seem to have the diversity to drive a car hard as other drivers do, and as is needed as a test driver.

He can drive a car that is suited to him very well, but I can't count the amount of times I have seen him get out of a car and say things like "it's awful, I don't know what is wrong with it". That is not the language of a development driver.

When he was at Williams, the cars went backwards down the grid. Same at Honda till as Brawn they discovered the magic bullet diffuser which gave a massive advantage and allowed Jenson's WDC - combined with his talent to drive it quickly. Same story at McLaren, car going backwards or stalled in terms of competitiveness. I am just not seeing it as a talent through his career. He has others, but IMO not development driving.

TBH I don't see the appeal for Jenson going to Williams..... for either party really. Though I would not object to McLaren keeping Jenson I suspect they will want to bring in Vandoorne rather than lose him.

Oh well. Retirement from F1 is his only option then. Stoffel is an odds-on certainty to take his seat.

The interview with Murray is giving a feeling very much like he knows the F1 career is over.
