So the only question is can he get in to Toyota WEC or if they go for Nick Tandy and/OR the other displaced drivers from the 3rd cars.

I don't see it personally, but stranger things have happened.

Ref him talking about inability to set a car up when he came to F1, I think every driver is the same, its a massive learning curve.

It does. There's always the argument that in a year when there's a major regs change that experience is important. However I don't think Jenson is the best driver at developing a car though- it seems to me he's very fussy and wants his car to handle in a very specific way which doesn't work for other drivers.
I have never seen Jenson as a development driver. His style is too unique and narrow, and as you say, he can tune a car to him to an extent, but he does not seem to have the diversity to drive a car hard as other drivers do, and as is needed as a test driver.

He can drive a car that is suited to him very well, but I can't count the amount of times I have seen him get out of a car and say things like "it's awful, I don't know what is wrong with it". That is not the language of a development driver.

When he was at Williams, the cars went backwards down the grid. Same at Honda till as Brawn they discovered the magic bullet diffuser which gave a massive advantage and allowed Jenson's WDC - combined with his talent to drive it quickly. Same story at McLaren, car going backwards or stalled in terms of competitiveness. I am just not seeing it as a talent through his career. He has others, but IMO not development driving.
He's never dominated any team mates either, and has that infuriating coulthard trait of a mid season lull, and indifferent qualifying just when he needed to pull a fast lap out the bag. Considering how good he was in a kart, he has been lucky to get the drives he has. Very personable though, at a time when the sport desperately needs characters and not robots.

Exactly. Tom Cruise didn't even know what oversteer was when he started in Days of Thunder wink

Benson on twitter:

Button says has a two-year contract with McLaren-Honda. Will be an ambassador in 2017 but not race. In '18 team have option on him to race

To avoid any confusion, forget the word retirement," says Ron Dennis. Button will be available to race if necessary

Button making it clear he needs a break from the rigours of F1 schedule

Button will stay fit, do lots of sim work. "A dream to have that rest and have the opportunity to race in 2018." Vandoorne will race in '17

He's mental if he thinks he'll get a race seat in 2018.

So, very unlikely to do WEC if he needs to be available for F1.

Not quite!

2 year break but could race next year if needed, staying at Mclaren as an ambassador.

ETA McLaren have an option on him for 2018, so he could be back driving.

All a bit confusing!

He will race next year if Alonso or Sotffel are unavailable. Di Resta fulfills the same role for Williams.

There is no chance he'll get a seat for 2018 if Ron won't give him one now. Clearly, he wants to race still but has no seat, so he's trying to keep some tiny chance of doing so in his head. Its a bit surreal really.

Back up in case Alonso gets fed up and leaves?

The 2018 option is just McLaren hedging their bets against Alonso retiring at the end of 2017 to ensure they can still have a WDC in the car.

I liked this from someone on Twitter:

Alonso gets a rookie as his McLaren team-mate, who annihilated the GP2 field while racing for ART. This sounds familiar.

What a shame after all that hard work developing the car to the point where I think they will be near the sharp end next year. I'm sure JB is wise enough to know there is no chance he will come back in 2018 and this is just playing the game.

What game and to what end?

I can't get my head around why he'd sign such a deal? I thought he had WEC or WRX aspirations for after F1?

I'm sure he'll still be getting paid a handsome retainer for doing nothing for two years.

He answered that one already:

Pete Gill ?@petegillF1 30s31 seconds ago
Fernando Alonso on taking on another rookie: "It's ok, he's not British" #SkyF1 #ItalianGP

hehe

Alonso has gained quite a good sense of humour over the last few years.

Absolutely, he's always been quite fond of the money.

This.

It's not like he needs the money.

Finishing up at Williams would have been a more fitting F1 swan song, and if you can't be arsed just leave.

Was there an offer from Williams on the table?

Never got that far, from the james allen article it seems Button tried to stall them and they lost patience.

And is it likely the Williams will be a decent car next year?

I'm well fked off tbh!

I also don't get it, is he a reserve driver? As it just says they have a 3 driver line up! What's his actual role?
Is this if Vandoorne is crap they can toss him to one side? If Alonso quits the drive is jensons?

I just don't get what his actual role will be
