Like any race I'm looking forward to the weekend, but I don't get why everyone seems to think Silverstone is a great track. It's so flat and open.
Me too. I think it's "history" gives undue weight to the quality of track and the racing, when compared to other "classic" tracks (e.g. Spa)Vaud said:

So will Sauber last the season? Sadly I fear they won't, or rather, not in any shape or form that means a viable team for 2017.
There was news last weekend of a new investor in the team, it was said the deal was more or less a done thing and that it would involve a change of ownership, so presumably Peter Sauber is giving up his share and whoever the investor is will pay down the debts. Kaltenborn has a small share in the team, it was suggested she'd be staying (god only knows why..).So will Sauber last the season? Sauber missed a test earlier in the year for the same reasons

It does have height variation, just not as extreme as some. But it has combinations of fast corners, slower trickier bits and high speed straights. Plenty of overtaking opportunities so it's not usually a procession. I guess it depends on what you want from a track - breathtaking scenery maybe not!

Given what we have on the calendar these days it's certainly one of the better ones, there are overtaking opportunities and the fans give it an atmosphere unrivalled at most of the other races. The drivers love the circuit, and that's always seems to come through. For once, I think Benson nailed it; "It's not as crazy as Suzuka, as amazing as Spa, as spooky as Monza or as glamorous as Monaco.
But Silverstone has something special all of its own."
I've not yet had the pleasure of Suzuka, but have done the rest plus others, Silverstone is special imho. Just for Becketts alone in terms of where to watch cars demonstrating phenomenal cornering. Slightly biased but atmosphere is pretty good too.
Agree the ticket prices got silly, which just meant from ~2005 we started arriving on the Friday and camped for all 3 days to get better value. Have never looked back, even in 2012 mud fest.
Roll on the weekend and Lewis and Jenson on the podium, one can dream!

To drive I agree there are some fast sweeping corners but it is very flat and so wide that I found it getting dull, booked a second day to give it another go but I felt the same, it is so featureless.
Brands GP, Cadwell, Spa even Snetterton which is also flat, I preferably go to those over Silverstone both to drive and spectate.

I completely agree - I used to do trackdays years ago in a Caterham. Silverstone in a Superlight is as exciting as driving along an empty motorway. Brands (both), Snet and Spa where my favourites. The 'ring was too scary.Brands GP, Cadwell, Spa even Snetterton which is also flat, I preferably go to those over Silverstone both to drive and spectate.

Because their are some great corners.Maggots and Becketts are great, sweeping and tightening means you line has to be spot on entering or the error just gets magnified.
Flying down hangar straight is quite down hill and one hell of an experience and stow can be taken at stupid speed.
I've slid round club, it was nice and off camber on the outside. Not driven the new parts, but they look fast and technical.
A great challenge.
I guess the difference is "challenge for the drivers" vs "a great track to watch a race on"
If you are technically minded it may be great - the point might be that it looks dull compared to Spa, etc, even if the racing challenge is comparable, but that it is hard to translate this to most viewers?
(I find it a bit dull, and I've had the privilege of watching as a guest of a team and talking to the engineers, drivers, and watching parts from the pits so have had some extra context / detail)

I suppose, the wife certainly agrees with the viewpoint. If you are technically minded it may be great - the point might be that it looks dull compared to Spa, etc, even if the racing challenge is comparable, but that it is hard to translate this to most viewers?

Maybe plant some trees, build a few nice hotels and casinos around the track, maybe a Ferris wheel or a river or a marina!. A handy medieval castle is a nice touch.
Personally, I will just watch the cars

No need to build anything, you can just hang up some sheets with the background painted on, I hear :-)Maybe plant some trees, build a few nice hotels and casinos around the track, maybe a Ferris wheel or a river or a marina!. A handy medieval castle is a nice touch.

There is a rumour going around that the Sauber investor I mentioned is Tetra Pakistan, apparently tied to sponsorship of Ericsson. Allegedly Sauber have 120m euro debt (how?)
Regardless it seems that employees have been paid for the first time in a few months, so something is going on.
