Demeanour in the press conference and Ricciardo's raised eyebrow almost suggests Mercedes have told them not to race hard tomorrow. Hope it's not a procession or it will be an afternoon nap instead.
Might explain Hamilton's mood. And the statement that its going to be a great weekend for Mercedes. There's always the start. T1 here is a nightmare as it pinches on the inside but there has always been half the pack on the run off to the outside. Between T2 and T6 we are likely to see some contact. After that, well, it's possible to pass at T6, especially with the DRS.
Electrical glitch in Nico's car though will be a worry for him if they don't know what caused it and can't reproduce it in the garage.

Why would Mercedes be able to dictate to another team whether they can race hard or not?
????The body language suggests the Merc drivers have been given some kind of instruction and Ricciardo smirked in response to the mood.

Stewards are inconsistent with the unsafe release penalties.
2016 - Australian GP - Hyrianto unsafe release (he hit Grosjean) in free practice. 3 place grid penalty and 2 penalty points.
2014 - Spanish GP - Jean Eric Vergne unsafe release in FP. 10 place grid penalty.
2015 - Belgian GP - Kyvat unsafe release in FP. Reprimand
2016 - German GP - Hamilton unsafe release in FP. Team fined. No penalty for driver and no reprimand (which would have been a grid drop for 3 this season).

Whoever qualifies on pole gets the race I imagine they were told. Go against this and you'll get a slow pitstop.
I get the impression there is some kind of agreement already in place because the Merc board will be in attendance. I hope I'm wrong but when asked about the race tomorrow the way Hamilton spoke suggests this. For all their bullst rules and keystone cops routines, can the FIA not somehow force that drivers are required to race and not just hold station?
Just coming back to you Lewis: your thoughts ahead of tomorrow's grand prix? It's going to be another tough battle in prospect?
LH: It's should be a good day for Mercedes. That's the goal and yeah, we'll race it out.
Q: Lewis, obviously it's been a very strong couple of months for you. You've come right back to the point where you're now leading the championship going into tomorrow's grand prix. Just tell us a little bit about the importance for you of going into that summer break with a win under your belt. Is that something you particularly target? And how do you look back on this last few weeks?
LH: I think the importance is not particularly relevant. We've had, what, five out of six races wins, so it's been a good mid-stint of the season, and hopefully tomorrow we get the first or second and that'll still be great. We'll still be in good position. Of course, every race you approach to win.
Q: (Dan Knutson - Speedsport and Auto Action) Nico and Lewis, last weekend the start and the first couple corners set the race. How much different is it this weekend and how much easier is it to get past on this track?
NR: It's a different world here because you can overtake on this track if you get a significant speed difference. Nevertheless it's still going to be a good battle off the start and in the first couple of corners, for sure.
LH: It's a much easier track (on which) to overtake. But that doesn't mean you can but it is much easier, it's one of the easier ones.
Q: And your thoughts just on that first corner and then the run down to turn two?
LH: Only one car can go through turn one so it's whoever gets there first.

I would like to see Rosberg get the job done tomorrow.... another pole he really needs to convert it for once because it seems Hamilton just has huge momentum at the moment and unless Rosberg can turn it around the championship is going to turn into a victory parade after the summer break.

The rules have changed over time and penalties have, hopefully, reflect the specific circumstances of the incident. One of my major complaints is that penalties are identical when cars a speeding regardless of circumstances. If you are doing 40 in a 30, you get the same regardless of whether it was school turn-out time or 3am.2016 - Australian GP - Hyrianto unsafe release (he hit Grosjean) in free practice. 3 place grid penalty and 2 penalty points.
