Divorcing my psycho ex wife, currently own an M235i with all the trimmings. Looking to make a stupid purchase on something EPIC to take my mind off things, yes it's stupid, do I care? No.

Have around £1,000 a month for either HP or PCP. Huge petrol head, the more exciting the better and don't mention the M4 please as its crap. Any ideas? Happy to blow money on something stupid for a couple of years, saves her getting her hands on it during the divorce anyway.

What do you recommend? Currently considering...

Used Audi R8 V10 PCP
C63 AMG 507 HP
Caterham brand new (with a £1,000 shed to run around in)
Audi RS6 used or new

My Neighbour has a Jag F type coupe.
Looks great.

Either that something a bit brash like a new V8 mustang.

but whatever you buy it needs to be a LOUD colour.

If it's purely for fun I'd cross the RS6 off your list.
If it's a "do everything", it'd be at the top of mine though.

Based on the "fun" element
Could you get an Ultima? Atom?

I take it you want something eye catching (for the right reasons) to the opposite sex?

If that is the case I'd avoid anything larger than a 2+2 and ideally aim at something 2 seater.

911 would be the obvious choice, preferably the targa if you can swing it. Evora would be my shout, especially in extra shouty orange with the black roof. There should be enough money left over to get a decent Cilo for the track as well with the Evora.

If you just want something great to drive then go down the Caterham route. You should have plenty of cash left over to keep the BMW or get something else from the same price bracket.

I'd go with an Atom or a Caerham and a daily runabout.
If you have to have 1 ca, go for a big V8 thing like a C63 smile

Would the budget stretch to a Mclaren 650s or 675?
I'm sure with a good deposit you could get one for £1k a month?

And when it turns out your negotiator isnt as good as hers and you have to have an awkward conversation with Audi Finance about this R8 you cant afford now.....

Look for an arrive and drive package at a race prep company who can enter you into a series for the year on a PAYG basis. I dont know these people, but something like this; http://www.lohen.co.uk/racing/motorsport-services/...

Having a friend who went through this in the last 2 years i'd agree with this. He got taken to the cleaners and had to sell his Aston. He went down the PAYG track route as it also meant he could get away from it all and truly get the most out of the car.

He also found that while dating the only girls that cared about his car were complete head cases and best avoided. Most made no distinction between him picking them up in a 116d v an M4. Both were BMWs to them and therefor impressive.

Girls don't give a flying w'nk about cars.

They like champagne, handbags, Ubers and hotels.

As with the above post, be careful if you are going through a divorce and it may end up in the Courts.

It seems that you have been able to spend at a reasonable level on cars during your marriage. However, moving from an M235i to a McLaren or Audi R8 may well cause major alarm bells to start ringing for the Court and/or your wife's legal team.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but often people will try to spend more than normal or simply dissipate assets believing that this will put them beyond the spouse's reach. However, whilst it may work for those individual assets disposed of, it can backfire spectacularly if/when the Court deems the spending to be a wanton disposal and then "compensates" the other spouse using money from the other assets (normally the house).

Furthermore, committing income to finance will also not necessarily protect it from a maintenance claim (assuming this may be a concern for you) as the Court can (and often will) deem that it is possible for the finance agreement to be brought to an end so they make the maintenance order anyway. Thus, it is possible to end up having to either pay maintenance and the finance or, otherwise, having to end the finance agreement early at huge cost. Either way, it is unlikely to be your spouse feeling the pain or having to deal with the aftermath.

Obviously, your financial circumstances are not clear from your post and you may well have sufficient income and assets to do what you have set out without any real impact on your wife's financial claims. However, I would advise anyone going through a divorce to exercise extreme caution with unusual or extravagant spending as it often translates to a £1 for £1 reduction in what you eventually get from the overall pool of resources.

You may find it useful to consider the below quote from an old case which often still gets quoted by Judges in cases involving such circumstances:

‘A spouse cannot be allowed to fritter away the assets by extravagant living or reckless speculation and then to claim as great a share of what was left as he would have been entitled to if he had behaved reasonably.'

Once again, sorry for posting the negative response but, sadly, I see circumstances such as the above everyday and know just how difficult the Court process can be for anyone deemed to have wasted family money.

I can't really offer advice on what to go for but I can say if I had £1k a month to spare I'd probably opt for HP so in X number of years you own said epic car.

I'm an AMG fan although I prefer the CLS63 over the C63 personally. smile

Don't go for an Audi. R8 or RS6. Lovely cars but not appropriate for this kind of situation.

My 2 suggestions for a post-divorce blowout

£1,000 pm can get you something very special. I personally wouldn't be looking at Audi RS or AMG cars (bar the GTS smile)

997 GT3.. (Mezger bow) or 991 maybe?

Good friend of mine and I went to Crewkerne last week and he came away having bought a brand new Atom 310. That thing absolutely blew my mind. So I would definitely vote for something from Ariel for the mad factor! The Nomad looked sensational too.

£1000 a month over 2 years is only £24000. A golf GTi costs more than that.
You may get something like an Alfa 4c if you put £20000 down as well and you will still own the car in 2 years with relatively small depreciation.
Otherwise your option is to rent/ lease

Yes I have one. It's the reverse of what I said above.
You still need to make the balloon payment or you don't own it.
Otherwise the dealer has you tied into paying more every month for another car which kind of isn't what the OP said.
I got the impression he wants to be seen paying into something for the next couple of years, not forever.
