Hi
I own Peugeot 206 hdi 2.0 it has covered 111k miles and it seems to be difficult going into 1st gear or reverse,1st feels like I'm pushing against the turning gears of the gearbox and reverse crunches and I don't want to push any further, I can select both these gears fine when the engine is off sometimes this is the only way
all other gears are fine,
even if I select first when coming from second like when crawling in traffic when the car is moving it slips in easily
Other times both gears seem fine and I can select them , it's very intermittent
I have changed the gearbox oil with what Peugeot recommend and bought it from dealers but this hasn't helped
Any ideas ?
I've bought a new clutch kit ready to fit as recommended by a local garage (was passing today) but as the car cost just £500 I don't want to pay the labour £200 to fit the clutch only to discover I still have the problem.

What do you think people?

Clutch problems tend to show up in all gears, as the clutch doesn't know which gear you're in and can't choose to piss about in only 1st or 2nd.

More likely to be gear linkage or internal gearbox fault. First point of call should be the linkage between the gearstick and the box.

Hmm this is what I thought but the garage said it wouldn't affect other gears as your already on the move,
I think he said that the clutch has probably gone week?
But why does it go in her fine with engine off surly that points to a clutch not operating correctly

Well, before you change the clutch, if it were me, I'd bung on a new set of linkage rods. IIRC these have a set of 3 that cost around £30. They have ball sockets at the ends which are made of French cheese.

I don't see how bad gear linkages could cause grinding when selecting gears with the clutch fully disengaged so I'm going to disagree with Hammers67 and say that it sounds like classic clutch drag to me.

ETA: no concentric slave cylinder in the 206 so I've removed that part from my post.

Its very likley that the clutch is f/up get it changed before you wear out the syncro's and need a gearbox too!!

Ok will do, thinking about doing it myself, never done a clutch before though, is it worth attempting, all o would need I think is a clutch alignment tool

Well, it could well be the clutch but from my days working in Peugeot parts depts, gear linkage rods went out of the place like Spurs fans during a home defeat.

Cheap and easy to change, if the ones on the car have done 111K, I'd start with them before ripping out the box.

Sounds like the linkage to me. Can you put it in second at rest without a graunch?

If the clutch is functioning properly then the first motion shaft will not be turning when the clutch is disengaged. If the first motion shaft isn't turning there cannot be any grinding of gears and the gearbox should behave exactly the same when stationary with the clutch depressed whether the engine is running or not.

If the linkage was bad enough to not enable gear selection it'd
a) be noticeable at the gear lever
b) be equally impossible to select gears with the engine off or once on the move.

It will be the clutch. Over time the drive straps on the clutch cover wear and this means the cover does not fully release the drive plate when the pedal is pressed. As HustleRussell has said above, the gearbox is still turning and because there is no sychromesh on reverse and hardly any on first, these are the gears most affected.

Where does this topic mention add WD40 to fix gear selection problems?
You may be needing a new gearbox shortly

I was a touch slow on this one, it wasn't the WD40 it was the tin that was put in the box

Don't worry about the tin of wd40 it's the contents that went in the gear box but , my problem has been solved
