Have a 6 speed lynx ford mondeo tdci titanium 95k mileage diesel and endless problems with faults. Also tyres expemsive and wear out on the front every 12k ish and I don't drive hard. Looking to get shot and trying to find better alternatives with cheaper running and comfortable on the motoway. Had Honda civic suggested 2.2 deisel as a good option. Tried one at 70k selling for 4.5k. Looking for better reliability and running costs. Driving wise my key concern is motorway comfort and running costs as I do 25k.miles a year ish. Not much elese bothers me. Any views appreciated....

Civics (and many Japanese cars) aren't renowned for the ride quality unfortunately so might not fit the bill if high mileage motorway comfort is a priority?

I did some diesel research recently and there are a few concerns about the Honda engine. Google honda 2.2 cdti

I ran the 2.2 cdti engine for around 200,000 miles (between an Accord, CR-V and FR-V) and never had an issue. They need Honda fuel filters at the required intervals, the correct grade oil and that's about it.

It's a great engine for its kind.

Civic diesels are supposed to be heavy on clutches but a guy I work with is on 85,000 on the original clutch ('07 plate) so perhaps he has just been lucky...

A better Mondeo sounds like the answer to me.

It's 2016 and, despite what the Internet will tell you, cars are staggeringly well built and reliable. Finding the odd badly maintained (and even more rarely, genuine factory lemon) example is as unfortunate as it is inevitable given the sheer volume of cars that we consume.

Chalk this one up to experience and buy another. I'm not sure what the common faults are with the Mondeo-of-a-certain-age, but look them up and ensure they've been corrected and, unless you're an idiot (I'm sure you're not) or very unlucky, you'll be fine.

Thanks guys. May try the civic and see then. Find the mondeo eats tyres..a common issue it seems. Get about 12 k out of fronts on Michelin primacy and 18 k ish on last rears. Twice yearly changes get expensive at 100 a corner

Have you had the tracking done on the Mondeo?

I concur with the earlier poster, the Civic is going to be smaller, noisier and less comfortable

We went looking at Civics and so many were rough body wise, the fronts looking like they have been machine gunned, dont think the paint was up to the job.

Maybe I should grit my teeth and hopefully having gone through a few issues it will be better for a time....aside from approaching the 100k belts change of course

Civic and Mondeo aren't two comparable cars. Totally different sizes.

I've just come out of a Mondeo Tit X and if they hadn't replaced it with the newer model (which I simply don't like the looks of) I would have simply gone out and bought another. I ran Michelin PS3's and used to get 20K out of fronts and double that on the rear after spending sub £100 on a hunter alingmentyes

The tyres on our Mondeo pool cars seem to need changing every 15-16k also if you want a Honda then I'd take a look at an Accord especially if ride comfort is important.

Check out a Skoda Octavia it's a comfy car, lots around to choose from, a 2.0L Tdi should do you well.

The diesel civic is an excellent car for the most money.
Spacious, comfortable, reliable, efficient, cheap to run.
The Mondeo is very good too, it just depends what you like.

The only thing not reliable on the 2.2 is the clutch, it eats them like I eat green berets.
