Once you are are the back due to grid penalties each starting position you cannot take results in a 1 second time penalty in the race.

This means you can get a new engine turbo unit etc but start at the back however you cannot gain extra free engines unpunished?

Thoughts?

They did do that last year, but it and the rule about carrying over penalties to the next race were both dropped.

Personally, I think we should drop grid penalties for component over use completely.

Instead, give an allocated of (say) 8 of each component. At the end of the year the team receive extra WCC points for every unused component.

Thats not what i said. last year they carried grid penalties over. I mean once you are relagated to the back you then start taking time penalties in the same race meeting. nothing carries over to the next race.

Yep, they gave time penalties last year for unused grid penalties. For example : https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/headlines/2015/...

Even simpler - if you run out of restricted components, you don't race.

What if the loss of a component was due to a non-fault accident? Would make it a double bonus to take another car out if they would be out of that race and had to sit out future races because they'd run out of bits.

Anyhow, F1 needs simpler rules if it's going to continue to be relevant and grow its fan base, not 55 place grid penalties or even worse, time penalties so cars finishing 1st actually end up 7th.

So, if that happens (deliberate accident) - take a component away from the team responsible and give it to the victim.

If it's a genuine accident - tough. It could happen to anyone and you should be making allowances for that in your strategy for the year. All these points & penalty based systems just end up rewarding the big budget teams and penalising the others.

Punish teams with docked constructor points NOT drivers...simples, 10 points for every infringement

Agree with this, driver penalties hurt the show and should generally only be when the driver is at fault. We're always told that the teams only really care about the constructors (and that's where the financial gain is), but they rarely punish the teams in that way.

Component limits were designed to reduce costs. It's a pointless idea unless you're willing to limit total spending. As they have completely failed to do that, why limit components in this way?

I don't care if it's an arms race. It's not like we haven't had a dominant team under the current rules! Maybe limit them to one set per race (old ones can be reused later if you have a practice failure - one spare for first round).
