It was a new design being tried for the first time in readiness for mexico (high altitude )

I suspect the design engineer cocked up the flow direction meaning the breather flowed the wrong way.

There are multiple transfer pumps in the fuel cells that are capable of running a few psi pressure into the cell. With a full fuel cell that could lead to fuel being pumped out of the tank to start a syphon flow condition.

I suspect that is why the fuel continued to flow with the power off.

I've seen it before when a breather valve failed on a sports car I was running I'd just put 120 litres into. It's not funny.

Well Merc, especially in Hamilton's hands, looks to be on a different planet in practice. Looks like the main battle for qualifying will be can Ferrari get ahead of Red Bull.

Pretty radical how they've reprofiled turn 15. The inside kerb has been raised about 1m so it's now hugely off camber.

Nice to see Button in top 10! Still with the "old" engine?

Is Rosberg keeping Hamilton in sight on purpose, to see where he is faster / copy his lines?

It is pretty clear that Rosberg can't beat Hamilton in a straight fight this weekend........ so it will be interesting to see if he can minimise the damage just as Lewis did at Singapore last weekend.

Well it didn't do him any good if he was, lets hope Lewis can get it off the line tomorrow.

I wouldn't be sure on Palmer being there. I'm not sure that Renault are interested in money over talent, both drivers are not yet confirmed. There are still rumours they are chasing any number of drivers, latest name I heard was Bottas.

That was quite a good quali. I was impressed that Nico managed to claw back quite a lot of time there in the end, though I was really hoping Max would have split them.

It looks like it is going to be quite a good race tomorrow, a few cars have some pace to mix it up a bit.

Yeah Lewis needs a good start or else Max is going to get I amongst them into turn one - and that wont end well either way.

The left over oil and cement dust on Lewis' start line won't help either, going to be an entertaining start by the looks of it.

^ A couple of drivers commented about that cement dust and how it may impact the start. I hope not it would be a shame if half the grid have their start messed up.

However if it rains I guess it will all wash off anyway.

Anyone else think Ferrari and their drivers look rather depressed at the moment. Relatively they haven't really closed the gap to Mercedes and now Red Bull seem to have the edge on them when everything is turned up to maximum in qualifying.

Cement dust already gone, it wasn't there in the GP2 race.

Start will be important but so will be corners 1 and 2, if two cars get away well and go wheel to wheel its going to be impossible to be in the right place for both corners. pole is on the inside of T1, outside of T2. We could easily see some wheel banging down in to there, especially with Max lurking - we know he isn't shy of making a move.

Let's hope he bogs down and we get a proper race, and Nico wins of course !
