I'm sure if I could be bothered to dig through you'll find examples, but tennis is not exactly my cup of tea,
You won't find lots of examples of Andy Murray making comments in an attempt to undermine the achievements of his rivals and you won't find them from Federer, Nadal or Djokovic either; however, go back to the likes of Connors and McEnroe and you might have a point (plus they got up to all sorts of tricks on court as well!). But sorry, to say all great sportsmen in any era run their opponents down in an attempt to play mind games and gain an edge simply isn't true I'm afraid....
http://www.espn.co.uk/tennis/story/_/id/15221425/andy-murray-admits-doping-suspicions-some-opponents-seem-getting-tired

Nothing to see here...move along.
You're right, nothing to see; who is Murray undermining there?
Seriously? All of his opponents who he alludes to that because they beat him are on drugs.
If you think Andy Murray is accusing anyone who beats him of being on drugs your interpretation of that article is very different from mine! smile

It's the British way... anyway, Murray doesn't identify as British.

Tongue in cheek... but he did used to say that he didn't want to be British; rather Scottish. I'm ne' bothered either way.

Blimey, you're at it now. Murray joked that when he won he was British, when he lost he was Scottish. He definitely identifies as Scottish but if you've watched him at the Olympics or Davis Cup he very much identifies as being British too. I think he's bloody brilliant and really quite inspirational but of course he has his detractors because he can be dour, emotional, miserable, makes excuses etc.

Got any after a player has announced his retirement?

Nico is not an opponent or a competitor. Or was Lewis just ramming a few more nails in the coffin to make sure?
Who cares? What are you looking for, the sports hero who is also a perfect human being? Let us know how that works out for you.

Here's a wild theory. Do you think there's a fair bit of arrogance within Mercedes? Lots of talk about Nico being very intelligent that's then mirrored in the press and commentators, you then get an almost derrorgatory commentary from Wolff, like he talks about a child in regards to Lewis and then you get the recent comments from Nico asking him to move over then driving slowly etc.
Maybe it's just me but alot of people (Merc) seem to look down their noses at Hamilton, even after three titles.
I just don't get it he impression that they see Lewis as a talent or F1 great.

I don't think he does make excuses but other than that you're absolutely right, he's brilliant and if there's any justice he ought to be a shoe-in for the Sports Personality award again this year. Some people seem to take a perverse pleasure in trying to run him down but what he's achieved is outstanding, especially given the quality of the opposition he's faced. To put it in perspective, getting to number one in his era has been the equivalent of beating Senna or Prost - in contrast, Hamilton has just lost to Rosberg....

The history books will show that but what they'll miss is that Lewis was absolutely on it this year and was denied a 4th WDC by a ridiculous set of circumstances. I've found his dedication in the face of those odds, whilst not on the same level as Murray, pretty seriously impressive. Rosberg on the other hand is an epic loser and anyone who thinks otherwise secretly fancies him because of his pretty blonde locks.

Read up about 1982 - and call 2016 ridiculous.

No comments on winners wink

Honestly - you follow sport.

I had no idea an entertainment between people we'll never know could cause such personal ire.......crazy

If Rosberg is a loser I dread to think why that makes all of us mere gawpers at others' competition - that we either secretly or openly wish to do!!!

I know we all pick favourites just to be involved and maybe bask in a sniff of reflective glory. But thats all we are - bedraggled onlookers to others activity and glory.

Im not sure* that qualifies us to look upon any participant and dub them 'loser' - considering that they all participate in the sport we revere and we are but plumbers, accountants and call centre operatives - or surveyors or shop
Owners or makers of unexceptional widgets.

  • by which I mean It definitely doesn't

He started identifying as British once his advisors informed him he'd be cutting off millions if he persisted in remaining solely Scottish.

Pity his countryman Paul couldn't work out he was more marketable if he wasn't solely miserable...

Haha. 1982 before my time but yes quite ridiculous. No idea whether Snr was as prone to forgetting to turn a corner or veering off a straight as Jnr though or whether it just fell in his lap.

No ire here whatsoever very much tongue in cheek.

Don't want to put Murray down but nadal and federer have been injured most of the year so hes only had Novak to deal with...by contrast nico has only had Hamilton to deal with who's engines lost him 70 odd points.....

This is nonsense. Please link to an article where he has said he is Scottish and not British. As far as I know this all stems from one (maybe a few) early interviews where he corrected a journalist who called him English.

Yep, he's only to deal with the player who's been number one for most of the last 5 years! No disrespect to Rosberg but frankly Novak's standing in tennis is a lot higher than Nico's in F1 and therefore even allowing for the absence of Federer and Nadal for much of 2016 it's still been a terrific achievement by Murray. At the end of the day you can only beat what's in front of you and Murray did that whereas this year Hamilton didn't - yes Lewis had more mechanical issues but he also had a couple of indifferent race weekends which could have made the difference bearing in mind Rosberg only won the title by 5 points. I hope and believe Hamilton will bounce back in 2017 but his 2016 doesn't even begin to compare with Murray's IMO.....
