I think Hamilton is without doubt a top driver and, all other things being equal, would beat Rosberg 9 times out of 10 (or should that be 17 times out of 18?! ). However, Rosberg is far from a journeyman driver and deserves far more credit than he's been getting IMO - he's nowhere near an all-time great but he's a very competent and capable F1 driver and over the course of the season he deserved the WDC this year in my view. Nico, enjoying a comfortable fun filled life with his family, watching his daughter grow and flourish, won't care one iota what we think, whether he'll be remembered as a great or whether he wasn't man' enough to defend the title next year.
He's achieved what he set out to do and now is in the enviable position do do exactly what he likes for the rest of his life.
Sounds like a winner to me!

In fairness he always has had the good fortune to control his own destiny. But, I agree with the sentiment entirely. He's achieved what he set out to do and now is in the enviable position do do exactly what he likes for the rest of his life.

What does that say about Alonso then?US perspective on Rosberg's retirement from Road and Track. Not sure I agree with all of it, I think Rosberg is better than many give him credit for, and having had a couple of interactions with Lewis in the (distant) past, I think he's misunderstood: http://www.roadandtrack.com/motorsports/a31807/for...

A fair and balanced post; well presented. All I'd say is; why do the team bosses, pundits et al' all rate Hamilton and Alonso as the best on grid. Surely that alone says something... something opposite to what it is that your saying.Schuey was a dominant force and often held that status in a team. One of the reasons I like Hamilton is that he lets the driving do he talking; he has never once asked for status within a team. Perhaps to his detriment! Schuey asked for status; Vettel, Alonso of the current crop... for me, it's one thing that separates Hamilton from the many other legends.

Worldwide, people could generally care less about Rosberg. As the article says; there was an air of being there out of duty, rather than for passion; and it showed in his driving and subsequent retirement from F1. Good luck to him; I think an underrated driver; never a legend in the making so he's quit at the right time IMO. The fans want racers going to toe to toe and in all conditions. We need it. Hamilton, Max, Ricciardo give us that - and with a more equal footing, car wise; let's hope for some classic seasons ahead.37chevy said:
