The last Race of Champions I saw was won by Gilles Villeneuve in a Ferrari T3 at Brands Hatch;it's a measure of how much better F1 has become that the RoC it's now dicking around in buggies on a football ground..

So many drivers have clauses in their contracts that, say, Lewis can't be photographed driving a Ferrari or be seen on TV driving something other than a Mercedes. That's why they use nondescript buggies that can't be identified as a particular brand.

Yes, I know that thanks. I guess the point I was really making is that none of these race of champion deals amounts to a hill of beans, including the original IROC series in the Seventies. The Brands RoC was a non championship F1 race , often well supported by works teams and popular with private F1 entries, when such things existed. It even featured the odd champion , not that being WDC perhaps mattered as much to the race going public then as it does now

Isn't the current RoC based on the gram canaria rallying end of term bash that sort of grew arms and legs rather than any F1 routes?

That old racing thing on BBC in the 80's was better.

Pitted drivers from track and rallying on a number of different races.

Thing is, the rally drivers usually won it. Good on Tarmac, but so much better on gravel they tended to win.

It was a BBC Rally Sprint

It used to be Austin Rover sponsored cars (Rover V8 rally, MG Mastro race saloons, Metro autotest etc) drivers like Jimmmy McRae, Warwick, Mansell, Blomqvist etc.

In the circuit race they used to treat it like stock cars! was funny to watch

Would love to see this sort of thing again makes race of champions look like school boy stuff
