No. I get.

I get that because I don't exactly share your idolatry for Lewis Hamilton you have to discredit me and speculate wildly about why I don't share your unconditional love for the guy.

Great straw-man argument up there BTW.
Let's ignore our back and forth for a minute. Genuine question; how much do you know about karting / how the karting and racing steps work? I'm not being sarcastic... genuinely.

I ask because you are now presenting yourself as someone who knows about it but I suspect you don't. Please enlighten us all. Seriously.

Sorry, I'm unclear - which is the "straw-man argument?

At the risk of being a bore... Nico and Lewis are both exceptional drivers separated by mere fractions. We are lucky in F1... no "pay drivers" (some bring sponsors) but the field is pretty tight right now.

Lewis and Nico have very, very different styles, backgrounds and approaches. Both are now WDC. One is a multiple WDC, one has decided to quit.

My personal view is that Nico is more akin to Prost/JYS. A thinker rather than a raw racer. I think it is wonderful to quit at this point. He is the judge of when it is right, not us.

Lewis is more akin to Senna and early Schumacher - sublime. I don't know - he is a fighter - but I doubt he would take the same route to exit - he would always see the "last gap opportunity" that defines him.

There is no need for the tribalism. Watch the racing. Enjoy it. It's not either/or. It can be both.

Again, you are building a straw-man argument. I made my point and I repeated it - Lewis Hamilton has on several occasions alluded to his hard upbringing and struggle through the ranks and formulas, and contrasted that with Nico, creating the narrative that his fans repeat that he was the underdog while Nico had an easy ride.

I was ambivalent about it at the time, but when LH turned up at Larkhall that rather dingy weekend he did not leave the crowd with the impression he was having to sleep in a tent that night, quite the opposite. So when one hears his hard-knock stories decades later it makes him appear less than sincere. That's before you take into account his whingeing and disrespect to his own team.

The '18 years' comment was the pinnacle of his crassness.

You could Google it. LH, KR and JB by far the most popular, IIRC, for several years now. LH has almost 4 million followers, JB has about 3 million, etc. These are not my projections. These are simple, Googlable facts. Opinions... do you really not know Bernie's opinions on what LH brings to the F1 circus?

I mean it when I say that Lewis is the best champion we have ever had.
He's not talking about racing, either. Just about how F1 benefits from LH's popularity.

I get that you don't like him. But claiming he's not popular is such a bizarre way to try and make the point.

The allegation that I'm bitter because I/my son (I have a 9 year old daughter who was a mere twinkle in my eye back then, and I was in the pits that day because a colleague invited me along) was beaten by Lewis. Oh, and that somehow my karting knowledge is relevant to how a competitor presented himself.

But, when you saw Hamilton with his backing; he'd already been through the hardest part ,with his dad... and the backing was purely because he earned it... you do get that, surely!? No?

I don't really know what Lewis gets up to outside of F1 but he is a great image for the product and very marketable.
Unless young Max starts winning.

An interesting point, but be cautious.

Twitter is dying.
Facebook is increasingly view as for 25 year olds +.
The incoming generation don't want to share their data or be on public social media - hence the growth of private networks like WhatsApp.

Lewis is great for the sport, but be careful on the measures smile

Personally, I hope (anti)social media does die out - but it normally morphs into something else just as popular. Aside from social media stats; Bernie has openly stated hat Hamilton is the most marketable / bankable driver.

Note; before I get labelled as a fanboi (or whatever) - I didn't say most likeable; just the driver with the highest profile; especially stateside which is where F1 is desperate to make inroads... and will be, by all accounts. Maybe it's the fake yank accent that he used to employ, what did it!

Given his home is in the US (Colorado?) I think he can be forgiven. I've lived in the US and have a horrible mid-atlantic accent at times...

Oh god; don't resurrect his nonsense. It's the rantings of a sad individual, convinced Hamilton was given a kart with afterburners strapped on rofl
Nope. It was just a response to the fake narrative that Nico had it all handed to him on a plate while Lewis faced daily battles to make it to the top. Both talented and both supported as a result. Lewis stopped being the underdog very very early in his career and some of us were there to know that.

That is all, but it seems those late to the Hamilton party know more about it than me, so knock yourselves out guys. Like your idol, you'll be blaming the weather/god/pitcrew/Mercedes/Max when he has his next pratfall. Who knows - he might even resort to playing the race card again.
You mean the karting team that both Nico AND Lewis were in at aged 15, which was backed by Mclaren/Ron Dennis?

The team that was run by..................................

Keke Rosberg rofl

I have a friend who lives between the UK and USA - and his accent does THE strangest things. He also claims that all of his dreams are in an American accent; very odd.

Anyway, yes; I was trying to give a little humour to an otherwise stale post!

Two years before that. Lewis and Nico were teamed in karting in 2000. The Larkhall race was in 1998.

Bringing this arguement back on topic; it must be said, Rosberg looks the more settled; even content of the two Merc drivers. And it's obvious that his wife and child are the key to that.

It's surely possible to have both the grit for racing; and the family but I suppose the balance would never be easy.

I also think it's a tad demeaning to assume everyone will want the same thing. But in this case, I think Hamilton has said he would like; to one day have the wife and kids; maybe he's just not ready yet. Who knows.

Good ol' Wiki'...

Hamilton drove for Martin Hines's Zip Young Guns Karting Team.[35] From the Cadet ranks, he progressed through to Junior Yamaha (1997) and Ron Dennis actually called him in 1998 after Hamilton won an additional Super One series and his second British championship.[24] Dennis delivered on his promise and signed Hamilton to the McLaren driver development program. This contract included an option of a future F1 seat, which would eventually make Hamilton the youngest ever driver to secure a contract which later resulted in an F1 drive.

A special talent indeed.

Yup, and not one that had to scrape-and-scrap at every level to get where he was. By the time he and Nico were competing they had the same machinery and backing, so the underdog-v-priveleged kid st is exactly that.

Sorry to have to burst your bubble, but if Lewis did have to face any financial hardship in his climb up the ladder it didn't last very long at all.

PS. For someone who claims to be such a devoted fan of the guy it is interesting that you only now seem to be availing yourself of the details of his early career via google.

What an absolute loser, i was never one of those who complained that he only won due to Lewis' issues and am not a massive Lewis fan. But this just shows what Nico thinks of his chances of repeating the win next year.

What a weak way to leave.
In which case I'd love to hear about your story of making it in a top tier sport and shrugging off the pressure it put on your family. Cock.
