Wehrlein. Dead cert.

The bigger question is who will partner him.

Pascal Wehrlein has been doing the post-Abu Dhabi tyre test with Hamilton.

I voted Vettel. But, I'd like Anthony Davidson to get the job. yes

Or, Aaron Lennon.

Wehrlein, Alonso, Button, or as an outside bet (which I would love to see happen) Max.

Edit to add:
Alonso will no doubt have a performance related clause in his contract, and Mclaren still have JB contracted who could step in to fill that seat. Both are/were clearly unhappy at Mclaren, and the ousting of Ron - who originally made the deal with JB to take a sabbatical - could also come into play here, particularly with JB who I suspect would love to continue in F1, but not just to make up the numbers or as a backmarker. I could see a situation where both are trying to outbid each other for who will take that seat for the least amount of cash hehe

Wehrlein is part of the Mercedes family, having won the DTM with them, but with the new aero shake up next year, experience (and having a second champion on the team) could be exactly what is needed.

Max's contract will be pretty tight I would imagine given how hot a property he is, but then almost every contract can be broken or bought out if you have enough cash..

Escape clauses will be a critical factor, possibly trumped by Merc money to soften the blow to any current team that releases a contracted driver.

I don't see it being Wehrlein given the drive, other than for a single year to wait for contracts to unwind and someone more experienced.

Sainz is possible even though not a Merc man as he has no prospect of moving up within Red Bull at the moment.

After Mercedes struggled to control Lewis and Rosberg they will only sign a young driver who will hopefully not annoy Lewis.

Hopefully I am wrong and they sign a big name to hold onto the constructors title which means more to Mercedes.

Would love Alonso to get the nod but that would be blocked by Lewis.

What about Mick Schumacher biggrin

Who is available or can get out of their contract at short notice?

Dream drive for someone! (through I'm still hoping for a good shake up next season!)

I've had the call today. Doing a test next Weds up against Lewis, I've said I'll use the Touran, give him a chance.

1) Sainz (Gasly to replace him)
2) Bottas (Di Resta to replace him)
3) Wehrlein (I don't know who gets to drive the Manor then ...)

hehe Very amusing, both of you.

Wehrlein on a one year deal to see if he can cut it, leaving the door ajar for Mercedes to attract someone else for '18 if he doesn't cut the mustard.

If you want to get all conspiracy about it, I can envisage Hamilton and Raikkonnen at Ferrari and Vettel and Wehrlein at Mercedes. I don't think it's likely, but it's not so impossible as to resort to calling someone a moron.
