What is rumoured to be so bad about his attitude?
I have heard the words 'arrogant', 'entitled' and 'difficult to work with' used.
I'd have thought those were the minimum qualifications for the job.
Those plus rich Daddy or rich benefactor.....

It'll be Wehrelein on a one year race seat whilst they work on a big signing for 2018.

Either that or any junior, new additions?

Would be ironic if they sign a big name and RBR or Ferrari produce a better car. Could happen with the new regs.
Indeed.
I thought it was a bit pressumtive Toto banging on in his interview about how they have the best car etc......given that anyone could have the best car next year, no one knows yet.

Ah yes - he pulled out on Tuesday.

"The 2016 F1 champion only decided to retire the day after winning the title in Abu Dhabi and only told his boss on the Tuesday"

Would make sense for Lewis to be "unwell" as they hadn't yet told the world. Or co-incidence.
I think that Lewis was put on the naughty step for Sunday's misdameaner on Tuesday. Remember he had a sudden foot problem for tyre t sting the last time he crossed Mercedes.

Plus it gave extra time to asses Pascal, who has already done plenty of simulator laps, so they already know his, Nico's and Lewis's relative performance.

McLaren confident Alonso is staying put.

Still would not believe that Alonso is not as we speak talking to as many contract specialists as possible.

2017 Does have regulation changes but not when it comes to engine. The Mercedes is still the fastest car on track.

In this instance, I think Joe is wrong. I think Wehrlein is a shoe-in.

1. He is available
2. He is already under contract - he has the most laps with 2017 tyres under his belt.
3. He fits in the car - 2017 car design will be pretty firm now - Ocon is too tall
4. Next you could be difficult so running an obvious No2 makes sense
5. 2018 is when plenty of top drivers contracts are up so a 1-year deal is possible. No other driver would accept that
6. He is the bookies favourite
7. He is the PH favourite
8. For Mercedes, he is German and young, so could be their future.
If Wehrlein gets the nod then it is to have a second driver behind Lewis.

Go forbid the Mercedes is the best car again in 2017 then one man will be Champion.

May as well not watch biggrin

Why do people think Wehrlein wouldn't be winning races next year, it's the car that had him at the back not the driver.

oooh I wonder if this is why Ocon was given the other seat over Pascal...

Where did I put my tinfoil hat....
Ocon would fit in the seat vacated by The Hulk, he probably would not fit in the Merc without compromising the engine air intake. The size of the 2017 tub will be fixed by now, both Nico and Lewis are slight so it will have been optimised arround their dimensions.

Ocon probably came with a bigger engine discount; FI need to save every bit of cash.

Do people think that?

I think that in the wake of Mercedes' three seasons of managing two number one drivers, they may decide to adopt a 1 & 2 driver philosophy with Wehrlein doing his penance as number 2. I wouldn't bet against him winning the odd race.

I read, though no idea how true, that both drivers would have been given the same engine discount so it was not a financial decision?!?!

Personally Ocon was signed by Force India ahead of Wehrein which must have some weight.

Also is attitude is pretty shocking for a youngster.

A fair few posts have hooked onto the 'German' thing.

Formula One teams choose their drivers on one of two criteria;

1) Are they quick and will they win races and championships (are they the best driver available to them)

or

2) Do they have money to bring to to the team?

Nationality has nothing (or very little) to do with the decision and point 2 is of no concern to Mercedes. There have been instances in the past, noticeably Japanese drivers being shoehorned into drives to appease Japanese engine suppliers and or sponsors but this is rare and never has it worked on a competitive level.

Mercedes sell cars all around the world, do not need a driver to bring budget and so we can be reasonably certain that they are going with 1.

Reading through a few other F1 websites, Wehrlein it seems, is a rather unliked individual at a personal level. There's been plenty of other unlikeable drivers in F1 over the years but this may play into their thinking.

My money is on Bottas. He's the most credible option with a team that would be appreciative of the money that they would get. Thing is, who would the get the Williams drive? Alex Lynne is a possibility but a big risk to put two rookies in the same team.

Agree nationality is overplayed here, although Mercedes came back into F1 with 2 german drivers, i think it does matter to them from a marketing point of view. Many of their sponsors have strong german markets.

Wehrlein seems the simple choice as he is free, but i get the feeling more the point is he isnt the next Max.

Nico really has dropped the team in it here, although still think behind the scenes Vet/Alonso will be trying to get a move sorted.
