The icing on that cake would be Button getting a recall and winning the WDC for McHonda.

Highly unlikely though.

Won't happen.
Hopefully won't happen.

Maybe Button fans will be hoping it will happen as I presume, if FA did bail out to Merc....(for a big fee) McHonda wouldn't want two rookie's as drivers next season....and they'd get JB back to do another year?

I would laugh though if Fred did jump to Merc and their car was pants next year laugh
that will happen

Yes, as if asking Lewis to let Nico win wasn't brave enough he's willing to throw Teflonso in the mix :-)

More importantly "if" Mercedes buy out Alonso that would be a death nail for Mclaren IMO, if the Merc #2 seat is the hottest in town the Mclaren #1 seat is as chilly a prospect as you'll see.

Although secretly would love Alonso to move, Jenson return under duress and Honda pull a rabbit out of a hat and make the 2017 Mclaren a Brawn-esqu masterpiece :-)

You all know the biggest winner in this of course- Lewis Hamilton... the driver so quick and difficult they can't find a team mate for :-)

Is Mercedes allowed to only enter 1 car? Probably still quick enough to win WCC and WDC with just Lewis frankly.

If Lewis and Alonso were to be at Mercedes and Lewis won he would deserve that title.

Alonso is a totally different prospect to Rosberg.

Mercedes would need to hire another Toto Wolff to look after this two.

As far as Alonso stating Lewis is already a Legend I am sure he does mean it but also he has been buttering Lewis up to make sure if he got the chance of a Mercedes drive it would not be a problem.

Anyway this is my personal view.

Come on. After 2007 F1 would be put back on the map with Lewis and Alonso in the same ream.

These two are the top two in F1 even now.

Yes Verstappen is extremely talented but still not at these guy's levels.

Logically, Bottas is the best choice. There's no doubt. But we will see...
So who would go to replace him at Williams?
I see Joe's logic with Bottas, Ferrari were interested at the end of last year, but in reality the have stuck with Kimi as their safe pair of hands, yet he frequently shows Vettel to be wanting.

Frank has the cash he needs from Stroll's dad. Why put 2017 prize money at risk? He needs to be ahead of Force India, not go backwards.

When all things have been considered, I still believe that the logical choice will be a 1-year contract with Wehrlein.

The $10 million that Joe suggests might be available might be better invested in the chassis, once the aero "tricks" of the other teams have been evaluated in pre-season testing / Oz.

Stop taking it so personally 37chevy! - You did ask!

And to anyone asking why people are STILL saying Button - it's because some people really, really, really want it to be him.

I don't blame them, I like Jenson and it'd be lovely.

But a night with Scarlett Johnasson would be lovely. Doesn't make it likely.

Wehrlein is the sensible, stable choice. Knows the team and the cars, has some experience, quick but unlikely to ruffle Hamilton's feathers over a season*. Plugs the gap, stops the distraction.

  • queue 37Chevy 'he'll take him on - he'll take you all on!!!!!' wink
The piece about Alonso is helium light in its content. They asked a question to make him talk about Alonso, paraphrased it to make it sound like he said it of his own volition and that's as close as they could get.

Chip paper.

I voted Wehrlein, as it makes the most logical sense to me - merc trying to do what RB have done with their young drivers, and I don't see them giving up either driver.
Alonso would be a strong possibility, but I suspect the previous history would kybosh that one. Would love it for JB, but he seems to be committed to retirement. I reckon Williams would want to keep Bottas for stability with Massa gone, and Ferrari look to have their seats sewn up but chucking Kimi in there could be good for a laugh!

a) Very good drivers with several years experience are languishing in midfield cars- give them the chance first.

b) I don't believe that. I don't want Mercedes to adopt a 1 & 2 driver line-up, I just suspect they will. It'll be interesting to see how Lewis' new team mate will compare, I'd suspect that if the drivers are on equal standing it won't all go Lewis' way, particularly if he has 'off' days like he has had this season.
a) if that's the case why were max/kvyat promototed....Mercedes have a development programme, they may as well use it.

b) whats to say Alonso isn't past his best? I doubt Mercedes would employ a 1/2 driver line up anyway....im sure lewis is good enough to beat pascal on merit.

my point is that certain people have been calling Lewis a mediocre driver In a great car....well now this is the time to prove it. put a young rookie in out of a manor and see how he does.....
a) Kvyat was promoted because Riccardo scared Vettel off. Verstappen was promoted because Red Bull had tried Kvyat and Verstappen turned out to be better. Red Bull’s car wasn’t great at the time so they could afford to take these risks. 50/50- Verstappen paid off, Kvyat didn’t.

Mercedes have the best car in 2016 and they have a strong chance of having the best car in 2017, if not, they’re not going to be miles off. They need to amass constructor’s points. With a driver of Bottas’ calibre available they do not need to take the risk. They can upgrade Wehrlein in the process.

b) Who said anything about Alonso? Won’t happen. I don’t think there’s a single driver on the grid to make Hamilton look slow, if any one of them could join Mercedes and beat Hamilton over a season that’d be a major achievement. A champion’s achievement.

It’d be great don’t get me wrong- my issue is with the suggestion that anybody but Alonso in the seat will be ‘st for the sport’. FFS they only have to replace Rosberg, obvious WDC talent aside he is a benign personality vacuum most of the time, anybody could be as interesting as Rosberg from a spectator’s perspective. Bottas could be as good or better than Rosberg given time. So could Wehrlein- we don’t know.
