Certainly not looking for a fight here as I agree in innate speed however do you really think Lewis, etc. would be able to manhandle an old school F1 car? Put up with the sheer strength needed? I'm not picking on Lewis, they're all ultrafit 'tiny dudes' to me. I just don't think they'd rise as high as they have in the same machinery. And Mansell, etc. Simply wouldn't fit in modern cars wink
It's a fairly pointless point - if you don't mind me saying so. Murray Walker has been asked umpteen times how you compare different drivers from different eras - and he has always said that you can't really - because the world is so different.

The point I am making is that it is rather insulting to confer negative attributes to young people today when comparing them to their so called illustrious forebears. You get that all the time and I think it is quite sad. People live in the era they are born in and cope with the pressures and strains of life that exist in that era. It's not their fault - they just have to get on with their lives whatever the circumstances.

And that applies to racing drivers as much as it does to soldiers, sailors or even accountants.

Really? in which era do you think drivers were stronger and fitter pound for pound than current drivers?

Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill and Jim Clark, Indi 1966...

The 1966 Indy 500 was nearly a British 1-2-3, until Stewart's Lola expired with 10 laps to go. Even though race winner Hill was also a rookie, JYS got the 'Rookie of the Year' award for his performance.

Anyhow. Put Lewis or his contemporaries in a 60s car and they'd say it was impossible to drive it. Put Clark, Hill or Stewart in a modern car and they'd say it was impossible to race it.

You train for what you need to do. If you popped Hamilton in any generation - assuming he was growing up and on target for F1 - he would adapt to the shape he needed to be.

Was it Froilan Gonzales who said in my day the drivers were fat and the tyres were skinny

How big do you think Stirling Moss is, 5'4"? Perhaps 5'6" in his prime? Fits the bill of 'tiny dude' perfectly biglaugh

Only on PH could a post about Brundle's heart attack become an argument about Hamilton's abilities!

How do you jump to the conclusion there's an argument? Seems like a civil discussion about the previous generation of F1 drivers. You read far too much into it.

Discussion / argument / whatever.

'Only on PH could a discussion about Brundle's heart attack become a discussion about Hamilton'.

Is that better?

Just a thought. If your conversations never deviate from the original highly specific topic, the participants probably aren't the best conversationalists.

In that case, why do we have forums and topics? Why not just one big chat room called "stuff"?
