Hi,

Probably about to get flamed/trolled for this...

Privilege insurance have asked for a DVLA license share code which i have given them, and now they are asking for a photocopy of the front and back of my driving license.

Can anyone potentially confirm the possible reason why they need a photocopy of my license, when they have all the information via the DVLA share code?

I can only think of the fact they want a good looking photo of me on file.

TIA.

Could be many reasons, is it in relation to a claim or have you just taken out the policy?
You're more than entitled to decline however that makes them more than entitled to cancel the policy or decline the claim (depending on whatever it is they're dealing with)

Taking out a policy.

I'll probably have to do it - but i can not think of one single reason why they would want this if they can access the DVLA share code.

I don't know why they want it either, but I've had to supply a scan of my driving licence to my insurer for about 4 years.

It could be an underwriting criteria in that certain policies that meet certain criteria need proof of identification on file.
It's unlikely to affect you in any way so if you're happy with the premium I'd comply, they have access to significantly more information than just your photo and realistically you're just a number and no one is likely to see it again unless you claim.

Phone them and ask why they want it?

When you go to photocopy it, look at how it is spelled.

Have you not got some blinds to go and count?

Licence. Better?

I've emailed asking them. If it is an underwriter requirement for the policy then so be it.

Thanks.

I've had that this request before and bizarrely because we had paper licences at the time they wanted a copy of the front and BACK of that too!

Front I can understand but the back was just notes. Quite ridiculous but they were cheap and that was what I needed that year.

Confirms address vs. licence details? Does the share code reveal your address?

Identity check? can't you apply for a driving licence using your passport photo held on record if its within a certain time of it being issued within the 10 years??

But wouldn't you have to show your face at the insurer's offices for comparison with the photo on the licence confused

Not if they checked it against your passport which most people have, as that has a certified picture?

My wife has been with Privilege for over 3 years now with me as an additional driver and they have never asked for a photocopy of either of our licenses.

OP didn't say he had provided copy of passport as well.

My understanding is that it does -

name, address, dob, licence codes, points.

So beyond a photo - i am not sure what else my licence has.

No, not had to supply a passport.

You don't need to. If the DVLA can renew your driving licence on-line without you submitting a photo, by using the electronic version of your passport photo that is on record, they can cross check you are who you say you are at the registered address on your licence.

My bike insurance did the same this year-but they also wanted the paper counterparts! I complied but also phoned them only to be told they didn't know why they wanted it!
