I'm after some current recommendations for website design software for a windows machine.

My site will have about 6-10 pages, each with a few photos and some text, and a few downloadable pdfs or other files etc

I have my own hosting/webspace/domain etc. Just want to design something then upload it.

Thanks for the ideas.

Just install WordPress and pick a template that tickles your fancy.

Loads to choose from here if you don't fancy the default templates

Or if you really want to lay out some pages, Photoshop or Sketch are the usual tools, however it'll take you some time to get up to speed if you haven't used them before.

Unless you need to show your designs around before starting to build, I'd dive straight into WordPress templates.

Edit - whatever you do, avoid the terrible online web build tools ie. Wix or similar

Adobe Muse is good if you don't need to get into the script.

I was told it's a good idea to use the templates offered directly within Wordpress rather than from an external provider like Themeforest etc.

IIRC these 'internal' themes are approved and function as they should from the get go, although some may still need plug ins to be installed to ensure a 'portfolio' (for instance) site displays properly. In my experience, at least.

With the 3rd party themes and plugins you do need to be slightly careful about compatibility - certainly some plugins can conflict and you have to work out which one is the culprit by de-activating and systematically re-activating and testing.

Having said that, it's worth it, as there are some amazing themes on offer out there.

I bought one recently that did everything I asked of it and plenty more besides. I could pretty much build any layout and functionality using the provided templates and components.

The very best option for a simple website is to write it in HTML, anything else would be overkill and also over complicated
Do not even consider Wordpress for a simple website
Should you wish me to, I can put something together for you and you can then very easily edit it, you could even draw a diagram for each page layout and have it created

Apart and aside from using you, how is he to write it in HTML (unless he knows the language)?
