Hi, can someone please help me. I have given my old car to my son. The car has my private registration on it. I was going to put it on retention, but I'm worried he wouldn't be able to tax and insure immediately. Can he tax and insure if the number has been put on retention? or do I need to wait until his new V5 comes back and then he transfers back to me? Many thanks

First things first, you have given both car and registration to your son.

If you did the online v5 thingy, then he should be able to tax it OK online (though you will note that both of you get to pay for January, which is nice).

He should also be able to insure it, though it might be better to find a deal and then ring them, as he would be well advised to let them know that it currently has a private plate and will be changing. That way, they probably maybe will make a note on file, and waive the admin fee when he rings back. It's easier if you have the original plate to tell them (and cheaper for him if you have the original plates).
