Hi, can someone please help me. I have given my old car to my son. The car has my private registration on it. I was going to put it on retention, but I'm worried he wouldn't be able to tax and insure immediately. Can he tax and insure if the number has been put on retention? or do I need to wait until his new V5 comes back and then he transfers back to me? Many thanks

Hi

If you do the retention on line, the car will be reissued with the original reg number or if no original reg no exists a new no reg number will be allocated immediatly.
You can then, again on line, transfer the car into your sons name and tax.
Reg doc will come back in your sons name.

Agreed with what AlecT has just said and its also a lot more easier now to do all this stuff online with the DVLA since the old way of by post or trying to find a VRO office somewhere which have now all been closed hence the new online system which I use a lot for many differing things.

Its still got a lot to update though into the 21st century as to my surprise last month it would NOT allow me to take my PP off my car and replace it with another new PP in its place for some strange reason.

After calling the DVLA they explained that because my classic car had been SORN'd at some point in the last 5 years regardless of me owning it for the last 3 years and continuing to tax it annually I could NOT action the process online currently and I would have to do it the old fashioned way via post and forms and then the cheeky buggers said I would have to take my classic car to one of their nominated VOSA testing stations to be inspected!!!!!!

After telling them politely " what a load of old crap " they were informing me of and as to WHY they just said that this part of their new online system had NOT yet been updated and I had to either do as they said or wait another 2 more years and hope by then the system had been updated and I could change my plate over to my new one which bloody well stumped me.

I asked if I could remove my PP and allocate the cars original plate instead and they said NO so in essence if I decided to sell my classic car I would lose my PP which is currently on the car which angered me more.

Hopefully in time they will sort out their systems and stop messing the motorist about for good.

Cheers
