Car launch 2017
Discussion
The Mercedes rear end packaging looks incredible. There is a lot more going on around there barge board area and vertical turning games in front of the side pods than the others have yet shown.
I see Force India are claiming an unprecedented step forwarded on the engine as well. I wonder if the other engine manufacturers are wishing they hadn't requested the development freeze be scrapped yet?

After all the talk of 'more aggressive' looking cars I'm left totally underwhelmed.
2016 tubs with fat tyres, stuck-on afterthought dorsal fins, wider front wing and a big square undertray grafted on to try and reconcile the difference in dimensions between the old a new bits is what I am seeing essentially.
Am I wrong?
Are most cars not pretty much 100% new (Sauber aside, possibly). The Renault apparently shares barely anything with the 2016 car.2016 tubs with fat tyres, stuck-on afterthought dorsal fins, wider front wing and a big square undertray grafted on to try and reconcile the difference in dimensions between the old a new bits is what I am seeing essentially.

I can't imagine Mercedes needing to fudge 2016 components to fit the 2017 regulations.
So much stuff going on around the bargeboard area. These pictures are from the thread on f1technical, by the way http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1...

Eurgh, horrible.
I'm actually really disappointed with the way these cars look. I know they'll be fast they won't be so fast that we can't see their various bulges, bumps and appendages. Somebody should've seen the increase in wheelbase coming, wheelbase to track is an important ratio in determining rotational stability (or something).

I had expected radical, rather than just a few tweeks.
I was surprised by the blandness of the Williams. The Force India looks like a dog's breakfast, whereas their car last year looked right.
The Mercedes looks the best so far, but I now do not expect any of them to be worthy of a bedroom poster to attract a younger generation to build for the future.
I bet Liberty are groaning; FE definitely looks better than this and also seem able to pass and race close by to each other - albeit at a very lowly pace.

Its fare to say F1 is back to being an engineers wet dream at least. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one underwhelmed by the new look.pits said:
Think they look good actually, have we all forgotten about these monstrosities
Looks miles better to my eyes. The basic shape and size is great, the aero additions less so but at least you can appreciate why they became that way. These are just crap (albeit I suppose the Merc does look okay in that it's neater than any of the others and that'll probably translate into a winning car again).

I'm not even for a moment suggesting that is what I think they have done. I was commenting on the look of the cars. These new regs were supposed to be a (relatively) clean sheet, yet what we seem to be getting is essentially the shape and dimensions of the 2014-16 cars with a bodykit.JohnoVR6 said:
people are surprised that the cars look largely similar to last years?! What exactly were you expecting??
It's not the similarity to last year's cars I have a problem with, it's the fact that the effect of the wider tyres, wider track and lower wings- instead of making the cars look more aggressive- has been completely cancelled out by the extended wheelbase. Not only are the cars much bigger, they also appear oddly proportioned as the coke can, cockpit and nose area has remained the same size but the bodywork has just extended out in every direction.Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
