I like the idea of a non-championship race. As previously said, mix things up with these races & have a bit of fun and make it interesting, something that F1 lacks. 10 lap sprint races, reverse grids, test / reserve drivers only, driver changes half way through, how many laps to make 10L fuel last, different circuits than on championship calendar (there are plenty of FIA spec tracks around) etc etc. How about a Le Mans style endurance race with F1 cars? or even use the Le Mans track for F1 the week before / after the 24hr race.

F1 as it is is just boring.

What I like most about the NASCAR is the camera work and the fact they talk to the drivers in the cars whilst under yellows.

Maybe this will all improve now Bernie is out of the limelight.
NASCAR is far better at engaging with fans. Been saying that for a while.

They also get fisticuffs like last night, not mature or professional, but it is funny hehe

All this non-championship race stuff is well and good, however is there really going to be a decent turn out when half the teams seem to spend their live on a knife edge between racing and bankruptcy?

Maybe hold it at the circuit of wales? They could race around a giant white elephant.

NASCAR is fine - only been to one but thoroughly enjoyed it and as said it engages fans superbly . But it I found it far from rivetting as ultimately it's low tech cars driving in circles with the pantomime of full course yellow thrown in to keep fans with low attention spans awake . Formula One is entirely different - and should be .

With 20 races in a season, is there actually time to have a non-championship race?

To me it initially comes across as a glorified test - NC race an idea plucked out of thin air. Brawn/Liberty will have to elaborate further details if he/they are going to be serious about this.

I did try watching Nascar the other week when I was in the US and nearly died of boredom. Adverts every 10 min (?), very hard to follow any strategy and a crash every lap (Daytona).

Though to be fair, the footage and camera work was way better than F1.
I thought Daytona was excellent, especially the last bunch of laps where anyone from that group could have won, and then someone unexpected came from way back on the last lap and did so. Three different winners for each 'section' of the race too.

Having to use the draft in order to gain an advantage, and also being able to screw the draft for the driver(s) behind you I find entertaining too, and important, given they are more or less built to run equal.

I find how they can race that physically close at 200mph fascinating - I love watching it, ad breaks aside, although it is great that they have the race continuing in a box at the side of the screen.

The camera work was good. I probably needed a Nascar expert to help me understand. Or more beer. Or both.

Beer and Buddies. Preferably with a BBQ and a fat arse TV.

When in Rome...

One of my best experience was at Monza in the general admission. Armed only with an umbrella to keep the sun off, and a Kangoo TV thingy.

In very broken Italian, French and English I explained the positions and positions in the race with the nice local family next to us (3 generations together) as we couldn't see a screen. In return they gave us prosecco and nibbles. Very civilised.

And a striking memory was the regard in which they still referenced Mansell as "il leone".

Pfft

Same old pack racing, same dumb big-ones (big car count wreck), still a big onus on a drafting partner - can we go back to slingshot passes a la Indycar please NASCAR? And I still watch this s**t as I'm a sucker for the romanticism of cars racing 200mph.

Stage racing adds nothing. It's NASCAR holding their hands up that they throw out phantom yellows.

The more they keep messing the more NASCAR will continue the fans interests. NASCAR you are fooling nobody, Daytona500 is blue riband event like Indy500 and LM24 and every other race on the calendar you can clearly see empty seats.
