Mercedes also bringing their first update.

At least McLaren are racking the laps up - that's...something

I think they are a dark horse - sand bagging at the moment. Newey has never failed to produce a great aero car (I think??) - the new renault engine has made significant improvements by all accounts - I think they've decided to go at 7 tenths......

Pretty sure that Newey has produced at least one dud, albeit back in 2003.

Anyway it will not matter how good the aero is if Renault haven't delivered the goods on the engine. Power will be just as important this year due to the higher drag to additional aero and tyres creates.

Red Bull have also been asking a lot of questions about oil use on the Merc (using it as a fuel in qualifying spec), so they're definitely looking at pegging them back a bit. Either that or deflecting from something they've done to their car.

Most of the additional downforce is coming through the relaxing of the rules around the floor and diffuser, which is why they're all trying to run as much rake as possible and designing clever suspension to manage the rake as the downforce increases. This downforce won't increase drag though, so the importance of power won't be affected quite so much. But whatever the rules, more power is always going to move you towards the front.

I would think the wider tyres and wider overall width will have more of an effect on the drag than the wing and general aero changes. Rotating tyres aren't very slippery through the air, and their frontal area has increased quite a bit from last year.

It looks like the tyres aren't exactly playing to form. Most teams seem to be struggling to get decent pace out of the softest compounds.

I'm amazed no one hasn't setup up a hasmclarenbroketoday.com page yet! 34 laps done and it's gone again!

[gets on hobby horse] Ferrari very, very consistent on longer runs on the mediums - signs pointing to a very solid chassis [/dismounts hobby horse]

Apparently an 'electrical issue'. Hopefully not like in the old days where that was a euphemism for exploding engine parts damaging the wiring as they escaped from the engine block.

Honda also confirmed that it was the same spec engine as they ran last week, and not the updated Melbourne spec they'd hoped to run this week.

Merc using oil as fuel in Qualifying spec? I haven't seen this story so have to ask, why what would the advantage be.

It would allow you to increase the amount of fuel and therefore higher boost pressure and more power.

Are there any sites around where people have analysed the long runs of each of the teams to try and draw conclusions?

The Williams looks quick.
Perhaps they should just let Massa drive it for the rest of the test.

Did they manage to get back out? Haven't seen any updates this afternoon.

They've been up and running again for about half an hour now. It looks like Vandoorne has done about nine laps in short runs in that time.
