Will be much missed, and a really sharp driver even in later years. His qualifying run in the 250LM at the 2000 Goodwood "TT" is still one of my favourite motorsport moments. Was incredible (he was in his late 60s), and he'd never driven the car before the session. Then drove away from the field in the race also..

That's a great article had no idea how much had done before setting up his own team, quite remarkable list of achievements.

I read on there that Paddock Hill bend was 'an uphill left-hander'. I always thought you turned right otherwise you'd be launched off the circuit and into the crowd...

I think you'll find race was run anti clockwise making it an uphill left.

I met him a few years ago at an A1GP (remember that?) demo day in Manchester. He was the manager for team GB and was just stood on his own watching the cars on their parade laps as they came past Albert Square. I had a brief chat with him. Lovely chap and very unassuming. The lack of knighthood for him when compared to sportsmen that have been awarded one in more recent times is unfathomable really.

Good to see BBC South East providing a report from his funeral yesterday - Mansell, Warwick, Chilton (M), Derek Bell and Christian Horner amongst the mourners.

Only problem was the photo backdrop photo of "Surtees" at the beginning of the report - 99% sure that the photo was of Mike Spence - how on earth did that happen ?
