First impressions look good. The cars look big, long low & wide but also quick n a way they simply have not done previously during the hybrid era.

Let's hope they also look quick in the race with full tanks.

Have to agree, the cars look much better, even on TV they're impressive on turn in and cornering - also looks like the drivers are being much more aggressive with the tyres both with turn in and generally slipping them, might just be down to dialling in the setups but hopefully the new compounds are part of it and we'll see it all the time.

End of FP1:

1. HAM 1:24.220 (only one on ultra softs)
2. BOT (+0.583)
3. RIC (+0.666)
4. VER (+1.026)
5. RAI (+1.512)

Interesting comment from Will Buxton: "Red Bull floor isn't too long. When the car is moving it has clearance. At standstill, it does not & rears won't move."

To be honest; this had me laughing out loud! Cheap shots aplenty!
Wonder if a certain Mr Denis was wetting himself too?
Ron still owns a quarter of McLaren racing...

Anyone watch the full session care to give a quick overview?

Judging by the times and reports alone it looks like Merc were massively sand bagging in testing and Bottas is perhaps a bit out of his depth?

And what the hell is going on with Williams, I hope they have more pace than they are showing so far... it would be sad to see them hanging around towards the back this year.

It's only practice I guess, and yours never. Wholly sure what everyone is up to - but that's ominous from Hamilton.

A lot of big gaps kicking around the timing screens

Possibly a little premature to say Bottas is out of his depth. We'll see how he is squaring up come Europe

Looks like Hamilton is massively ahead. TBH Williams lost a lot of time with massa having gear problems.

Dare I predict that we'll see a red car on the front row?

I think we're going to see some interchangeability in the order among the Mercedes and Ferraris in the top 4. I think the relative performance of the cars will be such that Mercedes are generally on top but if, for instance, Bottas doesn't quite manage his tyres into the right window for his quick qually lap, one of the Ferraris will start 2nd.
I think the 3rd row of the grid will be purple for much of the season.
Ferrari always promise to be on the front row at the first race of the season. It's a tradition.
And then come Barcelona, someone gets fired and faces are as red as overalls.

The only important message from pre-season testing is - DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE!
Seems you were right. Boring up front again frown

It's about the same spread as we saw last year at Oz so far. Hamilton was 0.5 ahead, and 3.6 sec front to back.

All the talk is about possibly catching Bottas. Pretty negative in the interviews and press conference really.

Anyone else see the clip from the driver's conference of Alonso taking a pop at Honda? hehe they were asked a fluff question - what would you like to add to F1 to make it more interesting (or something like that):

DR: A race in Vegas
SV: A race in Germany
LH: A race in Miami
FA: Equal enginesrofl

Anyway; I can't predict quali or race - I'm just hoping it is so close that it's bordering on pandemonium.
.. and then Lewis saying "not Honda" biggrin
After they'd all said V12 V12 V12!!! biggrin

Despite having to be in work today I stayed up and watched both sessions...
Initial impressions are that the cars are fast, look good (especially in the corners) and, I fear, this is Lewis' championship to lose.

All that said, the reduction in the number of engines allowed meant that there was little meaningful running in FP1 and even FP2 wasn't as busy as I recall from previous years.

What do you mean I'm not sure what you are saying?

IMO Bottas is going to be under huge pressure over the first 5 or 6 races this year because he is only on a 1 year deal with Vettel and Alonso both out of contract for 2018. So unless Bottas is getting consistently close to Hamilton within a few races Mercedes are going to be starting negotiations to replace him already.... and of course if that happens he would be damaged goods and the likes of Ferrari would probably lose interest.
