^ Adding to all of the above, all except Honda were not fuel limited last year and they weren't they using the full 100 kg allocation. These 4th gen hybrid engines are surely more efficient than last year (especially in the engine modes they use for the race). With the additional 5kg fuel allowance, I haven't seen a lot of noise from the engine manufacturer camps suggesting that they'll be particularly handicapped...

It's really not like that though. Highlights of F1 will pick the good bits and edit out the dull bits. With F1 highlights sadly it means you find yourself watching the dull bits still as they have to fill out the time. I've found myself actually fast forwarding the F1 highlights with some of the 'races'.

Match of the Day is a perfect example of a sports highlights show that works perfectly and not at all how you described it. as they don't show you the first 5 mins then skip to the last 5 mins...which is how you explained it with your book reference...
For people with a family, kids and life, a highlights show is perfect.

Worst bit about this scenario is trying to not find out the result before the highlights though.
The most exciting F1 race I ever saw live was the British in 87. For the second half of the race I was on the edge of my seat (I know that Silverstone grandstand seats are only edge but you know what I mean). I've not seen the highlights but I bet they were poor. It was all down to the one overtake. A stunning race but one which, looked at logically, was boring.

Hill's win over Schumacher in the 94 Japanese Grand Prix didn't have an overtake at all, but it was proper edge of your seat stuff. Damon's best drive IMHO.

The last live race I saw was Monza 2011. Naturally, we were there as fans of Lewis. We were sat at the Ascari chicanes and the only memorable thing was that lap-after-lap, Lewis attacked Shuey, but could not pass. JB caught up with them and in one lap passed both of them. How the hell did that happen?

Last Sunday, I happened to see a full replay of the race. The podium race was utterly boring, except that the TV cameras were utterly focused on the HAM Vs MSC battle, each and every corner, of each and every lap.

The TV coverage was spell-binding. But totally unrepresentative of the race we saw, live.

In the pre-BernieTV era, the TV director, would have dutifully followed ALO, failing to catch VET.

Yet we still think of them as being the good old days.

When do the teams start turning up for a GP? I'm getting twitchy waiting for the race at weekend and seeing photos of transporters in Melbourne might just keep me in check smile

Seriously though, I hate highlight shows. Its a bit like reading the first chapter of a book and then skipping to the last page.

I have family, kids and a life but I'd much rather have delayed full races than highlights.

As a sports fan, it's the strategies, build-up and background to the 'exciting' bits that makes the exciting bits even more special.

I hate the MotD approach to highlights.

They are at the circuit!

Photos from here: http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/formel-1/fotos-...

How tall is he?!

Bottas

Yes, even McLaren are here.

Wonder what'll happen with the suspension story that was doing the rounds in preseason? It's been quiet.

Sauber stuff. Bit plain?

Compared to this!

Check out the width of these rims!

Girls are here and present.

As a slight aside, I see that F1 are finally getting to grips with YouTube for the new season - and some of their archive material.

Bit stilted still, but some interesting videos.

Having been in Melbourne twice for the GP it really is a great place to be if you are an F1 fan and want to be able to get as up close as possible to the teams / drivers etc. I was out jogging around the circuit on the Weds and Thurs nights prior to the weekend and you could stop and see all the teams setting up in the garages. Plus in the centre of Melbourne the drivers aren't hard to spot as they usually stay in the same hotels as previous years. Have managed a few selfies and autographs in the past!

Can't wait till it starts.. i am praying that the changes made will really make this a season to remember! coolyes

Wonder if anyone at McLaren has talked to Ricardo about them doing a nice little F1 engine? Given that they build most of their road car engines.

If they are not careful they'll attract some much younger fans; maybe even as young as 50.

The internet, eh? I wondered what had happened to that. Seems like a good idea.

Dare I predict that we'll see a red car on the front row?

I think we're going to see some interchangeability in the order among the Mercedes and Ferraris in the top 4. I think the relative performance of the cars will be such that Mercedes are generally on top but if, for instance, Bottas doesn't quite manage his tyres into the right window for his quick qually lap, one of the Ferraris will start 2nd.
I think the 3rd row of the grid will be purple for much of the season.

It's going to be very interesting to see who will join the top 3 teams in Q3. That is going to be an almighty scrap. In my opinion the midfield is going to be technically close so it's going to be all about the drivers.

My prediction is a boring one;

Qually:
Ham
Bot
Vet

Race:
Bot
Rai
Ves

IMO one of the Mercedes will either suffer a bad start and become involved in a Vettel T1 crash, or otherwise suffer a terminal malfunction. Vestappen will have a swashbuckling start and the strategy team will manage to keep him in the podium positions but his Red Bull will lack the ultimate pace to stay in touch with the Mercedes and Ferrari ahead.

I was amazed at the things Hamilton was allowed to get up to in the off-season. I'm guessing they're a bit more relaxed at Mercedes.

I have no idea what Hamilton got up to, but there was an interview with Nico after he retired where he said one of the activities he was most looking forward to was being allowed to go skiing again.

Ferrari always promise to be on the front row at the first race of the season. It's a tradition.

And then come Barcelona, someone gets fired and faces are as red as overalls.

The only important message from pre-season testing is - DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE!
