Journos are beginning to report that Robert has been given the choice of Williams race drive vs. Ferrari development position and are speculating that he has chosen Williams.

Bad news for Sergey, another driver who will leave the sport without ever having shown what he can really do.

Ferrari are in need of a development driver though following DK (of whom I am a big fan of) returning to TR and IF RK is in for a full time seat at Williams. could be a good roll for SS to show he is a worthwhile resource...

A cynic would suggest that with a Russian GP they will find a way to have a Russian driver somewhere in the paddock...

Well with Kvyat in the Toro Rosso they have that box ticked. Really hope Sergey hangs sticks around.

Good point I forgot he was coming back. Wonder how long it will be before he and Vettel Collide. Though he can also have Max to play with...

Is that some kind of Russian tradition?

I guess so but I see Stroll as being a bit of a blocker (like a hospital bed blocker). Low on talent but only getting a seat over more talented drivers because his dad owns a team. No team would pick Stroll over Ocon based on talent alone.

I am by no means a Stroll fan but I'm not sure you could reasonably describe him as 'low on talent'. He did, at the end of the day, win Euro F3 (yes, with caveats)- and while it was obvious that he visibly wasn't ready for F1 in 2017 against Felipe Massa, I think it's much harder to gauge his performance this season.

The margin by which Perez beats him next season will allow everybody to re-assess if necessary.

Obv you'd pick Ocon over Stroll based on talent alone...

How many times have we seen people do well in lower formula's, or lower leagues (if you go outside of motorsport) and not cut it at the pinnacle of their sport? Ricky Hatton, for example, was a crap amateur but he was a great professional boxer. Audrey Harrison won Gold at the Commonwealth Games as an Amateur, but was completely out of his depth in professional boxing.

It sounds like Sirotkin's sponsor pulled the funding from Williams, by the way. For being utterly crap. So it may not have been Williams calling the shots on that one. With Williams I don't think driver quality is the main concern regardless of what they say.

Apart from that, I was going to suggest that maybe the financial health of teams is improving. With Ericsson and Sirotkin exciting the sport, there goes some pay driver money to another series. It could perhaps also be an indicator that sponsors are looking for other racing series instead of spending big on low to mid level teams that no-one really cares about in this division 1 division 2 type of setup that exists in F1 these days.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Robert Kubica was in the frame for this season, but couldn't bring as much sponsorship as SS.

But now RK comes with more funding, and SS with less - so it's RK for next season!

I just hope next season's Williams car is less of a dog - they are using Mercedes engines after all, and Force India have shown what can be achieved with them!

A couple of seasons ago Williams were pretty competitive at fast circuits - this year they haven't been competitive anywhere.

Even McLaren with what Fernando described as F2 power have ended the season way ahead of them!

Williams had Stroll and Sirotkin, McLaren had Alonso... who, incidentally, never said any such thing about the Renault PU.
