A friend with connections informs me that Ted Toleman has died. I must admit I thought he had long gone. Only reference I can find is an Instagram post and an updated Wikipedia page.

Sad if true.

Very influential figure in F1 back in the day and outwardly seemed an exceptionally cool fella. Honorary Essex Man too!

Odd that his passing gets no mention in the UK motor sport press.

Was he ? I thought the main interest in F1 came from Alex Hawkridge.

But RIP to Ted, he was a nice guy

In Autumn 1980 my school entered a car in the BP Build-a-Car competition, where the judging was done at the REME barracks in Bordon. I remember the championship winning (?) Toleman F2 car being there in the judging hangar as they had heavy BP sponsorship, and being able to kick the tyres on it. After that, when they entered F1 I was a Toleman fan. I remember the roar at the British GP when Derek Warwick in the 'Belgrano' overtook Didier Pironi in the Ferrari.

My other Toleman memory is a Page & Moy coach trip to the Italian GP in 1984. This was the 1984 race where Senna was dropped from the team for one GP, in favour of Stefan Johansson, as punishment for not telling Toleman he was negotiating to leave to join Team Lotus for 1995. IIRC Johansson's Toleman broke down at the end of the pit lane at the end of the race. I also remember than Niki Lauda won in the McLaren as I drew him in the sweepstake on the coach and won about 8 quid. Good times!

Ted Toleman was a guy who got things done. He also had to live through the trauma of his son being fatally shot in South Africa 20 odd years ago, which must have been horrific.

RIP.

A man who lived life to the full crossing the Atlantic with Richard Branson and multiple Dakar Rallies.

Godspeed Ted Toleman.

Though I was too young to follow F1 then I find the Toleman team endlessly fascinating partly because I find Rory Bryne under-rated compared to his peers likes of Murray and Newey. Drivers like Derek Warwick and Stefan Johansson are full of praise for some of the cars for its tidy handling and it would take a driver like Senna to put it on the podium on a few occasions.
