Dayinsure Wales Rally GB Friday Service 28/10

The one advantage to the nights now drawing in? It's Wales Rally GB time!

Friday Services are somewhat of a rare occurrence for PH, but when they come around they're rather special. Now for the first time in October we're continuing that tradition, as we have access to the Sweet Lamb stage as part of Dayinsure Wales Rally GB. This is a truly brilliant opportunity for us to introduce members to the world of stage rallying.

Watch rallying, chat cars - win!
Watch rallying, chat cars - win!
Since its inception in 1932, the International Rally of Great Britain has been run 71 times. It is one of only two events (along with Finland) to have retained its status as both a qualifying and scoring round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) since the championship was established in 1973.

Dayinsure Wales Rally GB is the penultimate round of this year's WRC. It's not our first time attending, having held a Sunday Service at Llandudno last year with special guests Nicky Grist and Derek Ringer.

From October 27-30, the Welsh countryside will be turned into one of the most gruelling and technically demanding stages in the WRC. PistonHeads has been offered access for 100 members to the Sweet Lamb rally stage in mid-Wales on Friday October 28. Not only does this give you the opportunity to experience rallying on a real stage in Wales, but the drive there and back will be sensational. With Aberystwyth and Rhayader close by, there are some incredible roads to explore in the local area.

Yes, it really is that far away
Yes, it really is that far away
We're giving the tickets away as 50 pairs and it's extremely important that you only put your name down if you're 100 per cent certain that you'll be attending. If you're going to attend on your own, comment to let us know so we can allocate the spare ticket to another member.

We know that attending this event may require some pre-planning and organising for those of you travelling some distance, so we have a couple of links to make this easier; see here to view and book accommodation in the area and here to get all the information you need on what's happening over the weekend.

Furthermore, if you wish to include the Friday Service as part of a full Wales Rally GB weekend, tickets are still available. See the website for more details.

Add your name to the calendar here.

See you in Wales!

hasn't happened for a good few years now! they are very much in control of the cars on the public roads now with everything measured down to an absolute.

Typically I've signed up to marshal Myherin this year instead of Sweet Lamb and then this gets announced rolleyes

By sheer co-incidence, I'm staying the week in Machynlleth with my son on half term holiday, so I'm right on the doorstep.

It's a shame that the 'younger' PH'ers on here will never be able to see a UK event like the old Lombard RAC Rally, with stages spread around a vast area and involving big stages etc.
'Elf and Safety precludes that sort of event these days, which is a great shame.
I've never been to watch the Wales Rally GB but used to stay on the doorstep of some of the Welsh stages near Penmachno, as well as living on the doorstep (goodness, I had a big doorstep back then) of the Clumber Park stages, but I starting to think that the time has come to watch it again, before aforementioned 'Elfs ban rallying for good....

This will be my twelfth year attending Wales Rally GB. For those that have never been before, Sweet Lamb is a great stage for viewing as it's wide and open; we'll be basing ourselves at the water splash/jump for the day.

Weather and interest dependent, we may look for a venue to meet up afterwards as it wasn't possible for us to have a PH parking area at the stage due to the nature of the layout there. Let us know below if you're interested below.

The tickets we've got to give away are full day passes, so you can move to Hafren/Dyfnant/etc if you wanted to see action elsewhere. The slightly older WRC generation will always go on about how it's not as good as the old days, but personally for me there is no motorsport that beats stage rallying, irrelevant of the cars taking part. Whether I'm at a local BTRDA rally or WRC, they're all just as mesmerising to see and hear.

Being stood out in the cold with a thermos, surrounded by hundreds of enthusiastic fans and the smell of pine trees, bacon, clutches, tyres and petrol; nothing comes close. Look forward to seeing you all in Wales next month!

It was my first time last year and I bloody loved it start to finish. Up at 3 in the morning on a great drive through the middle if Wales not able to see the scenery. Coming back the other way in the afternoon to a totally amazing landscape and roads. Me and my brother honestly can't wait for this event, and we're going the whole hog this time camping the lot.
Tbh I'm a bit bored old the old guard on here saying the rally was better in my day etc. Isn't the rally experience the adventure of it all? Freezing you knackers of in wet Wales with your fellow rally fans. Then rushing to get to the next stage?
It can't be that bad anyway. The ques last year for entrance to the stages where unreal.

There is still something special about the event, and why I'll still be going. I'm lucky enough to remember the classic Network Q/Lombard format (just).

Agreed though. Too many people harp on about it being better when god were a boy, I had been quite negative recently about the route and timescale, but now I'm thinking seriously about it, you just can't beat the echo of the exhaust off pine trees, lights through the murk, shower of gravel and glowing discs and exhaust yumyum

Besides which, we all know Tarmac spectating is for fannies. hehe

My first RAC rally I spectated at was 1983.

I drove there in my first RS 2000,went to Longleat and Castle Combe circuit iirc.

I also went to every RAC between 1990 and 2005,the year "Beef" was killed and not been since.

I went to Sweet Lamb yesterday for a recce, and it looks like it's going to be utterly brilliant. In the 12 years I've been going to Wales Rally GB I don't think there's a better stage for visibility and how long the cars will be in sight for. I'll send out more details in the next couple of weeks, but roll on 28th October!

Thanks, I plan to pack plenty of fleeces and waterproofs!

I am assuming that parking will be some distance away from where people stand?

I am Number 42 on the list and can't wait for this trip!

Apologies if I'm missing something hidden in plain sight, but I can't see how we get the tickets etc.

Do we just turn up on site and tell them we're with Pistonheads group?

Thanks,
Shaun
