I noticed the fluids very near the end. Followed through Brooklands very tippy toe just in case it was slippery.

Did you get anything good on your footage of my yellow Ginetta? Was in open space most of the time passed a few and was passed by 3 or 4.
Got a few shots but not all too clear, will try and edit it all into a useable video at some point. Was good fun following you, catching up in some corners only for you to leave me for dead on the straights! Great noise too.
Thanks: i'll look out for that. Was fun and be good to have a record.

You don't have to apologise to anyone, you had as much right to be out there as anyone else. On a track day the onus is usually on the car behind to do lions share of the work to pass. You simply accommodate and authorise.

I was in the Novice sessions at 9:35 and 11:55. I've done a fair few track days before but this was my first in this car and my first at Silverstone.

I didn't see any driving I would describe as dangerous, which as far as I'm concerned is about as good as you can expect from any track day. Sure, there were people getting held up and lots of us ended up doing a couple of laps in a parade fashion but I just ended up lifting off, letting the queue disappear into the distance and then spending the next lap catching them up again, it's all part of the fun. I also enjoyed trading places a few times with a Caterham. I find I drive a hell of a lot better when I've got someone faster to follow through corners than I do with someone breathing down my neck.

I can't comment on the other sessions because I wasn't out there but in general there is no excuse for overtaking on the wrong side, it isn't worth causing an accident just to prove to the slower chap in front that you're better than he is.

Had an awesome morning! First time out in my new car and also being my first rear wheel drive was an interesting session!

Brakes went off after 10 mins so was doing cool lap, hot lap.

Was in a Red e92 M3 on the 9am session if anyone caught any pics?

Cheers all. Ryan

Really enjoyed my first track session. I was in a white Lotus Elise on the 9:35 session, apologies if my driving wasn't quite up to scratch in some places, absolutely loved the car though, it was so planted and did everything I asked of it.
Any driving tips or feedback much appreciated from anybody on our session!
Was chasing you round in the BMW 330i Touring, though you still had me off the corners.
Round the 4.20 mark think that's you?

Great day out and really enjoyed my 9am TT too.

If anyone has pics of the session it would be great to see them (Red Megane).

Although I have to echo the comments about the 911 Silver Cab in the 9am session. I have onboard footage of them overtaking on the right hand side through a corner!!! Just plain dangerous.

Had a great battle with the F Type Jag, loved the noise!
Then at the end of the session I was held up by the 911 Turbo. The thing was rampant on the straights but would not let me past despite being held up round every corner.
Looks like the turbo EP3 and Yellow GT3 had a good battle on the session too.

Look forward to the next one.

And again at 24:30

I need to go through my footage as I seem to recall a car spinning in front of me but don't remember what it was.

That was me in the Monaro. Apologies if you couldn't get by, but public track days are a bit like that with all the different cars. Technically it's up to the guy behind to make a safe pass in the appropriate place .
That's not quite true. It's up to the car in front to lift on the straight and allow the faster car through, especially when the faster car has less bhp.
Otherwise a faster car with less power will never be able to overtake safely on the straight.

I do like a good Monaro (ex owner myself) and did like seeing yours out there. It was making a grinding noise on your warm down lap though, warped disc?

Every track day I've been on (and it's quite a few) have been overtake by invitation.

If you're being held up just lift off for a lap and build yourself some space. On occasion I've just dived in the pit lane, trundled straight through and come back out in clear space.

You have to remember there's always mixed levels of skill and experience and everyone is there to have a good time and learn about their car. This was a day of taster sessions so you should expect lets of people for whom it may be their first trackday. If you want to spend the day hustling people and pushing to pass get a race licence and go and do a test day. That'll open your eyes.

From the pitwall it looked like a sensible day and I wish I'd booked some time myself.

Who was driving the black Focus ST170 on the 09:35 session? I was watching that session from the grandstand and the commitment into Brooklands was absolutely immense, some outstanding driving sir!
Cheers! Maybe it was too much commitment which made it decide an early retirement was in order biggrin

Exactly this! I lifted off the let the modified blue Clio through but soon realised I probably didn't need to given the speed he disappeared, I'll definitely be bringing my semi slicks next time! What does it have done to it?

I was on track at 10:45 in a black Clio 182, it was great fun but I really missed not having track tyres, the road tyres were a bit disappointing. Please excuse the commentary on the footage... https://youtu.be/wHyoiICFKjc

Andy was on track at 11:55 in the white MR2 and I lent him my camera, you can see the Focus making clouds at the end of the first clip... https://youtu.be/WBuS2ViIr0k as well as the Noble getting things wrong in front of the Caterham on the first lap of part 2... https://youtu.be/DedN_BGIv0Q

As well as having that on film, I was sat watching in the grandstand and also managed to get a few stills of the Noble going backwards through clouds of tyre smoke. I took over 1000 photos in that 11:55 session so probably need to delete a lot of blurry ones when I was trying to be too artistic but if you send me a message with your car and email address I'm happy to email any decent ones I did get when I finally go through them.

biggrin thanks for the vid of my embarrassment. Apologies again to all the guys in the 11.55 session.

To be fair, in both the sessions I was in the driving standards were OK. Perhaps a few situations of people being a little tardy to move over and holding others up but nothing horrendous. At the end of the day it's not a race!

I don't recall this being mentioned in the briefing, although it usually is with other TDOs, as I was in a slower car I was doing this anyway. However, if it wasn't mentioned at the briefing you can't be surprised if people weren't doing it.

My MR2 has completely standard brakes except for these pads and I couldn't understand why everyone was braking so early.

They bite well from cold, I use them on the road although they can squeal occasionally, they didn't even hint at fading.

Far better than Red / Yellowstuff
Have you got a good source for these? I need some new pads for my MR2 Roadster.

You're right, it wasn't in the briefing.
However that is pretty standard etiquette for most trackdays, that if you are in (as an example) an M5 or Monaro but there is a Clio which is pretty much quicker everywhere aside from the straights, and you are in effect holding the clio up then you should just let the car past.

Otherwise it's frustrating for the car behind because they don't have the power to get past on the straights and also frustrating for the car leading because they are watching their mirrors everytime they brake or go into a corner.

There's no shame in letting faster (but slower!) cars past!

I agree with you.

But on a beginner day, you can't expect people to take the initiative, people ignore things that were mentioned in the briefing.

Great clips! I was in the GT86 that dived out your way haha. Also, looking back one of my overtakes on the MR2 was a bit borderline so apologies for that!

I'll PM your RE: Pictures.

Do you not think the intermediate session was maybe an over reach then?

Edited by xjay1337 on Sunday 23 October 20:23
Not at all, the novice sessions are described as being for those who have never driven on track before. We have (Nurburgring, plus Goodwood and Donington with PH the most notable). Plus we let people through when there's a faster car. I have a few photos of my wife letting cars pass on the pit straight so.....

The problem sometimes is that if you let people go you end up with people who aren't faster shooting through the opening and you then have to work to get past them again. It's a pain but it's a track taster session at the end of the day. You take the rough with the smooth.

There was none of this complaining at the Donington SS. Not sure what it is about this one that's brought the moaners out laugh

Having seen some terrible driving from some of the other people on her session it is hard to accept too much criticism, but we're both very open about the fact that we have plenty to learn. I just wish others were!
