A new Porsche 911 Carrera is 'only' £67,270 though.
Or used at under £28K? http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2760115.htm
Yes please but in grey - very elegant.Or used at under £28K? http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2760115.htm
For 90k the R8 knocks it dead.

The 4S in this article is faster than the R8, more practical, and gets better fuel economy. The R8 looks cooler, but that's about it, from the experience of having driven both and owning one.
I reckon it's very possible the R8 will date badly too & novelty factor will die off also. I too would like a review of a back-to-basics C2 manual...
I've got Tiptronic Chrono 4S and I like the security of the AWD and the extra punch of the S... Great fun, but I often wonder if I have not over egged it a bit... sometimes I feel that it lacks purity in the experience...
I've got an old E34 M5 that makes me smile everytime I drive it for just that reason...

Brilliant! After the C4 GTS and countless other variants, nice to see the back to basics reportage. This is what a 911 is really about and much like so many things in life, to get better than this takes a lot of cash for incremental benefit (and in some cases a detrimental effect.. e.g. turbo, cabs...).
Having had the 997 3.6 C2 for over a year I cannot praise this car enough. Sports seats and a wonderful sports exhaust improve the driving pleasure but that would be it for me - I wouldn't have wasted my own hard earned on the sat nav module for the PCM as rarely used and the Xenons are a waste of money as well. Plain black would have been just as desirable as Basalt metallic IMHO, but the black wheels look great and I even paid extra to have the 19" sport designs refinished.
Yes, a 3.8S is marginally faster but not enough to make a meaningful difference. The only people who have ever commented on the car not being a "S" seem to be under 25 and alarmed by the lack of red brake calipers!!! I love this car and the only problem it creates is what next?

Great write up dude
911s are my dream car, all I need to do is tear my heartstrings from my beloved Lancia and take the plunge. And 2 cars is out of the question as I live in London and parking is... well, its not.
Point is, its nice to know the basic(ish?) 911 still ticks all boxes in this ever increasing climate of variants - which I don't have a problem with by the way

I agree, and (after having driven a few as well) the V8 R8 feels (oddly enough) a little slow and not quite as enjoyable to drive as a 911.
Of course the R8 isn't slow as a Fiesta 1.1 would be, but it really doesn't feel as fast as it should.
The R8 has it on looks, noise and road presence.Of course the R8 isn't slow as a Fiesta 1.1 would be, but it really doesn't feel as fast as it should.
But like you say they 911 is quicker and more involving. Also the R8 uses the same engine as the RS4 which has bad coking issues due to the direct injection, more so than most other cars so it could be that by now there are many R8's not making their stated power figures, wheras Porsche horses are on the money, especially the older non DFI cars.
I've got 997.1 C2S with ceramics, aerokit, intake mods, PSE and needless to say it really shifts.

GTS has to be where it's at. Or the sensible option would be an '05 plate Carrera S. I've got 2 mates who both wanted to buy a GTS, but after a test drive both felt their 4 yr old Carrera S' offered 95% of the experience, but with far far less depreciation (as they've both lost loads already)
Or do what I did and get a 993!!
