Interesting viewpoints and indeed the standard "boggo" C2 is a good car but the vast majority go for the C2S over the C2 simply because it offers much better value: a small increment gets you significant extra power, PASM standard, xenon headlights, uprated PDM etc.
You think 20bhp is 'significant', huh? Well, I've been out and on the track with C2S's (.1 and .2) in my lowly C2, kept up with them and even overtaken them. PASM isn't all it's cracked up to be - a lot of suspension tuners prefer non-PASM and there's not a whole lot in the braking department either. The 'vast majority' go for the C2S because they think it's the better car and they want the street cred of the "S" on the bootlid.PhilboSE said:
If you're a keen driver, there's really only 3 variants in the entire range you should look at: C2S, GT3/RS, Turbo/S. You could probably also throw in the 2WD GTS into that as well as it's supposed to be cracking by all accounts. The 4WD, cabriolet & Targa versions simply don't drive as well as the above. Not to diss them, they're great for what they do, but they all lose something in the drive compared with the C2/C2S.
Can't agree. The C2 is absolutely worthy of anyone's consideration. I bought mine because I could buy a newer, lower mileage, nicer C2 than I could a C2S and didn't see the benefit of PASM when my car had pretty much everything else on it anyway. It is very spec-dependant of course but you can't rule the C2 out on BHP alone. All of that isn't to say that I won't be having a C2S/GT3/Turbo when I change this one in 12 months or so, but I'm just saying that you shouldn't be ruling the C2 out as the "one to avoid".

Matt - that's one of the best long-term owners report I've ever read, thanks for making the effort to write it.
Having owned a series of 993 variants from C2, C4S & tt, I regret ever selling the C2, it just did everything well and was a sweet enjoyable and cheap to run little car. The turbo was awesome but simply a money pit. I suspect the sweet spots in the 997 range have got to be the 997.1 GT3 and C2/C2S.
Thankyou. I did originally write it to win the Subaru WRX competition (I didn't win, but maintain to this day that I should have won ), but I enjoyed writing it and I've tried to keep it up to date.Having owned a series of 993 variants from C2, C4S & tt, I regret ever selling the C2, it just did everything well and was a sweet enjoyable and cheap to run little car. The c2s is the one to go for, despite your experience on the track ,the S is faster, the other drivers werent using the full performance of there car and it comes with better options. In my experience of pasm is worth it, it feels natural and offers a better ride quality day to day and less dive and roll on the track.

I can well understand the attraction of a black coffee.
Buuuut, EIGHTY NINE GRAND!!
At the complete other end of the scale (in more ways than one), you could buy a jap import impreza, get it tuned, and for under 5k, have something just as quick.
Not to mention another 84 grand in the bank to do whatever you wanted with.

Why stop there? Why not just buy a really good pair of trainers for £200 and run everywhere?
You'd be just as fast in the centre of London.
Holy thread resurrection Batman!
Was trawling through the classifieds and it seems the car from the advert is for sale...

Hardly covered any miles, too. Now all I've got to do is find fifty eight grand...
