RE: Estate Of Play: Fast Wagons
Discussion
I've always liked fast estates since I've had a pair of Labradors to scare senseless in the back.
In order to date;
Audi 80 2.8 V6 Avant (slow-ish but very capable and fantastic over distances - drove from Poland to the Loire Valley effortlessly)
2003 Scooby Impreza WRX Sportwagon (Wifey's Company Car and hence driven as such!)
1995 BMW 540i Touring (One of the 64 6-speed manual cars; rare, refined and very much missed)
1993 BMW M5 Touring (I feared the S38 engine's frailty for 18 months then it happened; st bodywork so sent off to be broken - not missed)
2003 Scooby Impreza WRX Prodrive Sportwagon (wicked and mental)
2001 Alpina B10 V8 Touring (Refined and completely awesome)
My shopping list for the future includes
Alpina B5/B5S Touring - only 5 made (4 x B5, 1 x B5S) so I'll have to jump when I see one.
AMG estate - either a 55 or 63
And I've always been a hairs breadth away from buying an RS2/4/6 Avant but my S3 and S4 experience has kept me at bay.

I always fancied a fast estate but couldn't afford the likes of the RS4s and Mercs. Last summer I got a Forester Sti from Litchfields and it's a blast, great fun to chuck around in the summer, room for the family and epic in the snow...perfect!..........well apart from the eye watering fuel consumption but I only do about 12k miles a year so can put up with that.

I really like my 2.7T Quattro A6, I'm assuming it hasn't had a remap but it does feel very quick book I believe is 245bhp/245lbs with basically that power all the way from 2000 to 6000rpm, it returns 24.5mpg. An S or RS must be silly quick and I imagine horribly thirsty.
An RS2 driven with regard to licence and responsiblity will return 28mpg minimum, hoon it up and it will drop. However with sensible acceleration and use of 6 speed manual gearbox it remains an economical proposition, 315 bhp, torsen quattro drive, 5 door estate and porsche brakes etc for £15k - compare that value to other celebrated marques. PS, it now qualifies for classic car insurance as well.Depreciation curve long gone, appreciation curve lifting and a pleasure to own/drive, that why we keep them and few good ones rarely for sale.
BMW 540 touring is another bargain now, hence buying on of them this month.

Must admit for me it would be the MG hands down. I have no idea why, but I find it exudes a charm that the others (or very few cars in the last 10 or so years) can match. I love the colour of that one too
Fortunately I like the colour too! I say fortunately, as it was the first Mk1 estate I found in 6 months of looking (they made fewer than 30), and I've only seen another 4 or 5 for sale in the 5 years I've owned it.It's also - maybe not surprisingly - the only V8 in that colour across all the variants.
