RE: Estate Of Play: Fast Wagons

Nice article Riggers, didn't expect to see it until July after experiencing your organisational skills first hand
I'm the owner of the 850R & a good day was had by all I think. It was good fun seeing & riding in the different cars. I was lucky enough to get a quick drive of the Merc & the acceleration & noise was unreal, definately brought those cars onto my radar!
Hora, I bought the 850R after having 3 new cars & tbh wear & tear was more what I meant than things that go wrong with the 850's. Most people know how reliable they are

Well, we did say that it wasn't an exhaustive list of possible candidates... and it was in part defend by which PHers responded to our e-mail prods...
...So if there's anyone out the who's got a Legacy Turbo, an Alfa 156 GTA or an M5 touring (plus any others you might think worthy) that you're willing to let us have a go in ,please do drop me an e-mail through my profile... we'll happily consider an 'appendix' article
Does it have to be standard or will modified do?...So if there's anyone out the who's got a Legacy Turbo, an Alfa 156 GTA or an M5 touring (plus any others you might think worthy) that you're willing to let us have a go in ,please do drop me an e-mail through my profile... we'll happily consider an 'appendix' article

You can borrow my Legacy turbo Riggers, but you can't put a photo of me on here though because I don't have a boyfriend and my Mamma wasn't fat! I thank you
The best looking Legacy ever..!! I really wish Legacywr did a 'Readers Cars' thread about the car.
Heres mine (sorry - any excuse)
That Volvo is awesome. When I think 'fast estate' Volvo is the first thing that comes into my head. Sure, there are plenty of other fast estates, but Volvo made a touring car estate! And we've had years of traffic police blsting up and down the country in them. Audi and Mercedes may hae pushed the boundaries of the fast estate, but Volvo made them into a serious ownership proposition. A fast Volvo estate is available for peanuts now, so needing an estate is no excuse to settle for a dad wagon!

volvo did a 200bhp 740 estate back in the day - squeezed out of a 2 litre engine which was fairly impressive in 1989
That was the 2.3. The 2.0 was 170 odd BHP... I do remember him grumbling that it had cost him 10 quid in petrol to drive from Watford to Bournemouth though
Excellent article! My first taste of driving something without a tiny engine was a Citroen BX TRI (or TSI?) estate , basically the gti estate of the range. Not the fastest of cars but a huge load capacity with the seats down, fairly quick and super comfy ride. Loved it, spectacular mot failure killed it though. Opened my eyes to fast estates, now i've got a modest e36 touring...

That's quite made my day seeing the photos of Jeremy's RS2 alongside other 'fast' estates.
I do miss my RS2 - and I know I'm biased - but I'd still have an uber wagen RS2 over the later pretenders
There's something rather special about hitting that sweet spot and leaving other drivers for dead in what they take to be a lardy old Audi barge.
Nice article, and while I can appreciate you probably did the article around what was available - would be nice to have this as a taster for a bigger group to include some of the cars mentioned here esp RS6 (Bi-turbo V8) and RS4 (V6)I do miss my RS2 - and I know I'm biased - but I'd still have an uber wagen RS2 over the later pretenders

I test drove an RS2 just after I bought my 1990 URQ 20v in 1993 and found the turbo lag and 6-speed box much harder work than my 5-speed URQ. Turbo coming in around 3100rpm v 2200 on the URQ and thus made stirring the 6-speed box a necessity. I had a 2.8 V6 Audi 80 in Australia and that was as bad - always had to be on cam. URQ pulls like a truck even from 1900rpm - admittedly it has a Superchips re-map installed by the original owner but still far more relaxing thann the RS2. Dealer sales guy wasnt impressed when I handed it back after the test drive and made the same comments - though thats probably more to do with Audi Sales people being up themselves as usual...

Another vote here for the RS6+
Was driving back from Le Mans doing a healthly speed in the Griff & one came past me if I was stood still.
Have to make do with my D3 Touring which isn't the quickest but certainly amusing on the twisties.
Then you probably re-passed him after he had filled up at the servo I know - had one for 3 years and at those speeds he was probably down around 14-15mpg...good to see them again though as they go by...Was driving back from Le Mans doing a healthly speed in the Griff & one came past me if I was stood still.

The best Italian estate is also missing, the Alfa 156 GTA Sportwagon, one of the best cars I've ever owned now selling for a third more than I got for mine 2 years ago!
been looking at these over the last few days.Q2 diff and 330mm brakes are apparently the bits you need to make them sweet.
8k seems to be the price for good ones but are they that much better than a 2.5 V6 which you can pick up for £2500?

850R is one of the original mainstream fast wagons.
RS2 would have to be my choice, as I like old skool! And that car seems just so raw and to the point.
C63 seems bonkers from what people have written, but the interior on the new C Class are very 'placticy'.
RS4 probably the best all-rounder, the interiors are lovely and Smita doesn't look that bad either!
